Abstract (eng): | This thesis work investigates Print Simulation Testers (PST) ability to predict printability and missing dot percentage by correlating it with more traditional surface roughness and printing measuring devices. Another goal of this work was to find out if PST could replace more traditional surface roughness measurement devices and printability testers. Also the possibilities to forecast calendaring result is analysed. The practical work was done by measuring PST's missing area percentage from the paper sheet. From the same sheets surface roughness, missing dot and missing area values were measured with Parker Print Surf (PPS), Bendtsen method, OptiTopo, Prüfbau Printability tester and Albertina Printing Press. All the sheets were measured two times on both sides and there was minimum of ten sheets per paper grade. With the received values correlations between PST and other methods were calculated. Calendering was also analysed between PST and PPS method. The idea of this test layout was to find out how well these two methods could forecast calendering result. All measurements were done on top and backside of the sample sheets. Overall 16 different grades were used in different measurements. These grades were news print, SC-paper and LWC-paper grades. All the measurements were done under laboratory conditions. Correlations show that there are decent or strong correlations between PST and PPS or Bendtsen method. This was the case also with OptiTopo and Albertina Printing Press's missing dots. Prüfbau Printability Tester's missing dots were the only one that had negative correlation with PST. It was also found out that PST forecasted calendering results better than PPS. |
Abstract (fin): | Työssä selvitettiin Print Simulation Testerin (PST) kykyä ennustaa painettavuutta ja puuttuvien rasteripisteiden lukumäärää. Samalla selvitettiin voisiko PST korvata klassisempia mittausmenetelmiä. Työ suoritettiin mittaamalla paperiarkkien karheutta PST:llä. Samoista arkeista mitattiin karheus ja puuttuvat rasteripisteet Parker Print Surfin (PPS), Bendtsen menetelmän, OptiTopon, Prüfbau Printability Testerin ja Albertina Printing Pressin avulla. Kaikki paperiarkit mitattiin kahdesti molemmilta puolilta. Jokaista paperilaatua kohden käytettiin vähintään kymmenen paperiarkkia. PST:tä verrattiin korreloimalla, sillä mitattuja tuloksia muiden menetelmien saamiin tuloksiin. Myös kalanteroinnin vaikutusta PST:n ja PPS:n arvoihin tutkittiin. Tällä koeasettelulla tutkittiin PST:n ja PPS:n kykyä ennustaa tulevaa kalanterointi tulosta. Kaikki mittaukset tehtiin paperin ala- ja yläpuolelle. Paperilaatuja oli yhteensä 16. Kokeissa käytettyjen paperien laadut olivat sanomalehtipaperi, SC-paperi ja LWC-paperi. Kaikki mittaukset tehtiin laboratorio olosuhteissa. Korrelaatioissa selvisi, että karheutta mittaavat PPS ja Bendtsen tulokset korreloivat hyvin PST:n arvojen kanssa. Samoin kävi OptiTopon puuttuvan alan ja Albertinan Printing Pressin puuttuvien rasteripisteiden kanssa. Prüfbau Printability Testerin rasteripisteiden korrelointi oli heikosti negatiivista PST arvojen kanssa. PST:n huomattiin ennustavan karanteroinnin lopputulosta paremmin kuin PPS:n. |
