Abstract (eng): | The Even Swaps method helps in finding the most preferred multiattribute alternative out of a set of alternatives. In an even swap an alternative is replaced by an equally preferred one that differs in two attributes. Trade-off judgments are used in carrying out the swaps. The method is based on carrying out a sequence of even swaps to eliminate alternatives one by one to find the most preferred alternative. The sequence of swaps is the path of the process. In theory, every possible path should lead to the same alternative. I study this experimentally. The results show path dependency of the Even Swaps process. This can be explained by accumulation of the loss aversion and the scale compatibility biases along the path of the Even Swaps process. In a separate experiment I study whether instructing subjects to think of trade-off judgments from two perspectives reduces the biases. The effect of the loss aversion bias cannot be found when the subjects are instructed to think each trade-off from two reference points. The scale compatibility bias was not reduced by the instructions that were given to reduce it. I suggest two ways of dealing with the biases in the Even Swaps method. One is instructing the subjects to think each swap from multiple perspectives. Another is forming the path such that the biases do not accumulate in favor of any alternative. On some paths the alternatives are made equal with respect to all but one attribute. This attribute is the measure stick of that path. Choosing a "measure stick" attribute in which all the alternatives are initially similar can reduce the effect of the scale compatibility bias. The effect of the loss aversion bias can be reduced by carrying out swaps evenly with all alternatives. |
Abstract (fin): | Even Swaps -päätöstukimenetelmä auttaa parhaan vaihtoehdon löytämisessä usean vaihtoehdon joukosta, kun vaihtoehtoja arvioidaan monen tavoitteen suhteen. Korvaavassa vaihdossa vaihtoehto korvataan yhtä mieluisalla vaihtoehdolla, joka eroaa kahden ominaisuuden suhteen. Vaihtojen tekemisessä käytetään vaihtokauppa arviointeja (trade-off judgment). Menetelmässä tehdään sarja korvaavia vaihtoja, mikä johtaa vaihtoehtojen eliminointiin yksitellen, kunnes paras vaihtoehto jää jäljelle. Korvaavien vaihtojen sarja on prosessin polku. Teoriassa jokaisen polun tulisi johtaa samaan valintaan. Tutkin tätä kokeellisesti. Tulokset osoittavat, että menetelmän käytössä on polkuriippuvaisuutta. Tulokset voi selittää vaihtokauppa -arviointien tekemiseen liittyvien psykologisten harhojen, menetyksen karttamisen ja asteikkoyhteensopivuusilmiön avulla. Näiden harhojen vaikutusten kerääntyminen Even Swaps -polulla aiheuttaa polkuriippuvuutta. Toinen koe osoittaa, että yksittäisissä vaihtokauppa arvioissa menetyksen karttamisen vaikutus katoaa, kun koehenkilöt ohjeistetaan ajattelemaan vaihtokauppa arvio kahdesta näkökulmasta. Asteikkoriippuvuuden vaikutus ei katoa keohenkilöille annetulla ohjeistuksella. Ehdotan kahta tapaa vähentää psykologisten harhojen vaikutusta menetelmän polkuriippuvuuteen. 1) Päätöksentekijän ohjeistaminen miettimään jokaista korvaavaa vaihtoa useasta näkökulmasta. 2) Even Swaps -polun valitseminen siten, että harhojen vaikutus ei keräänny minkään vaihtoehdon eduksi. Asteikkoyhteensopivuuden vaikutusta voi vähentää käyttämällä polun "mittatikku"-ominaisuutena sellaista ominaisuutta, jonka suhteen vaihtoehdot ovat alunperin samankaltaisia. Menetyksen karttamisen vaikutusta voi vähentää suorittamalla korvaavia vaihtoja yhtäläisesti kaikille alkuperäisistä vaihtoehdoista. |
