Abstract (eng): | Continuously tightening emission standards set engine manufacturers to reduce engine emissions, on the other hand customers demand more efficient engines. Even with the state-of-the-art technology available at the moment combining these two requirements is extremely challenging. Well known trade-off between soot and NOx emissions is still playing an important role in engine development. Additionally, due to need of reduction of NOx emissions trade-off between diesel and urea consumption is increasing its importance. In this master's thesis emphasis was set on the optimization of total fluid consumption in four engine operation points under the restriction of engine application and future emission standards. Optimization measures were limited to in-engine parameters: SOI, charge air pressure, EGR-rate and injection pressure and to their effect on fuel consumption, raw NOx, soot, HC and CO emissions. NOx emissions were regarded as s direct indicator of the needed amount of urea consumption. SCR technology is widely used among the engine manufactures to reduce NOx emissions. However, in certain market areas urea solution is relatively expensive compared to diesel fuel. Because of this, more emphasis has to be placed on the trade-off between diesel and urea consumption. GT-Power model was used to obtain turbine back pressure that corresponded to each given charge air pressure. Furthermore, GT-Power DoE functionality was used for systematic examination of the most interesting parameter combinations for the engine experiments. Engine experiments were conducted with one cylinder research engine. Based on the results of this master's thesis it can be said that by using high rates of EGR-gas NOx emissions can be reduced significantly without deteriorating fuel economy. Soot emissions are possible to keep low with an adequate air-fuel ratio and high injection pressure. |
Abstract (fin): | Jatkuvasti kiristyvät päästömääräykset asettavat moottoreiden valmistajat leikkaamaan päästöjä. Toisaaltaan asiakkaat haluavat entistä pienempi kulutuksellisia moottoreita. Jopa tämän hetkistä huippua edesutavalla moottoritekniikalla näiden kahden vaatimuksen yhdistäminen on äärimmäisen haastavaa. SCR -järjestelmä on laajasti käytetty järjestelmä moottorinvalmistajien keskuudessa vähentämään typenoksidipäästöjä. Kuitenkin tietyillä markkina-alueilla urealiuoksen hinta on merkittävä suhteessa polttoaineen hintaan. Tästä johtuen enemmän painoarvoa on asetettava kompromissille polttoaineen sekä uren kulutuksen välille. GT-Power -simulointimallia käytettiin turbiinin vastapaineen löytämiseksi vastaamaan jokaista haluttua ahtopainetta. Tämän lisäksi, GT-Power:in DoE toiminnallisuutta käytettiin systemaattisessa tutkimisessa, jotta löydettiin mielenkiintoisimmat koeajopisteet moottorikokeisiin. |
