Abstract (eng): | The use of building information models in construction projects is becoming increasingly commonplace; however, quantity take-off is still done by measuring from blueprints and calculating manually. This is a result from the unreliability of bills of quantities based on building information models. Due to this phenomenon, the tendering stage of construction projects frequently involves great quantities of overlapping work. This master's thesis is an empirical study aiming to test the reliability of tendering stage building information model based bills of quantities of precast concretes produced in a BEC development project. The subject is approached from the viewpoint of a structural engineer, using Tekla Structures 19.1 for the research. The functionality of the bill layout is examined through a case study of an example project model created according to instructions produced in the BEC development project. The figures in the bill of quantities produced from the structure model are compared to the manually calculated quantities, the quantity information from the IFC model, as well as the quantities provided by the precast concrete factory. This information is subsequently used for evaluating the reliability of the functionalities based on the bill layout. The research identified several sources of error in the quantity information produced by BEC bills of quantities: errors made by the modeler or caused by the accuracy level of the information model, errors in the environment in which the modeling software was used, in the bill layout features or in the delivery of the information model, and software errors. The errors in the bill layout functionality could be repaired or the faulty functions could be replaced by better performing ones. Some of the errors were reported to the software provider or other parties responsible for the updating of bill layouts. Errors made by the modeler could have been avoided with careful and logical modeling according to the BEC instructions. This study also discusses suggestions for further development in order to eliminate the sources of error and improve the usability of the tools. Project based enquiries of procurements are made at different stages of the design process and, in some cases, with very incomplete designs. If the bills of quantities produced by the structural engineer are to be used as binding information in offers during the procurement process in the future, also verifying the correctness of the required accuracy level of the quantities should be included as part of the quality-ensuring process performed by the structural engineer. |
Abstract (fin): | Tietomallien käyttö rakennushankkeissa yleistyy jatkuvasti, mutta edelleen määrälaskentatyö tehdään piirustuksista mitaten ja käsin laskemalla. |
