Abstract (eng): | Plasma treatment is already widely used to improve adhesive bonding of different components in the plastics industry. However, industrial applications exploiting this technique in the wood products industry are still non-existent. In this study, an evaluation of whether plasma treatment can be utilized in improving the adhesion of polyurethane (PU) coatings on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) -based vinyl overlays is conducted. In the experiments, both raw vinyl films and vinyl films pressed on medium density fiberboard (MDF) were tested. The hypothesis is that the adhesion problem is related to the hydrophobicity of some of the vinyl overlays. Therefore, wettability of three different types of vinyl overlays was tested. First, samples were wiped with four different chemicals (thinner, NaOH, hexane, 1-octanol) and, as a control, with a dry cloth. Then, water contact angles on the vinyl surfaces were measured 1 h and 24 h after wiping. Second, samples were exposed to glow-discharge water vapour plasma in order to change the hydrophobicity of the overlays and further to increase their wettability. Samples exposed to vacuum acted as a reference. The efficiency of the treatments was evaluated by measuring contact angles at four different times after the treatments. Third, samples were first exposed to either plasma or to vacuum and then conditioned for different times before spraying them with PU. The adhesion between the vinyl surface and the PU was examined by conducting an X-cut test according to retold standard ISO 16276-2:2007. The results show that plasma decreases contact angles clearly more than any of the tested chemicals. However, plasma surprisingly seems to weaken the adhesion of the PU on the vinyl overlays. It can therefore be concluded that even though plasma surface treatment is an effective technique to increase the wettability of vinyl overlays, more industrial scale research on adhesion between PU and vinyl overlays is needed. |
Abstract (fin): | Plasmakäsittelyä käytetään jo laajalti muoviteollisuudessa parantamaan eri komponenttien liimautuvuutta. |
