Abstract (eng): | In concentrating photovoltaics (CPV), optics is harnessed to concentrate sunlight into small multi-junction (MJ) solar cells, and thus the highest solar module performances have been reached. With the new and promising, but debated technology, it is aimed at lowering levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) by replacing expensive cell material by cheap optics, and at lowering the material use and needed module area. High-concentrators (300-2000 suns) were in the main focus. CPV requires high direct normal irradiance and dual-axis tracking. Thus the suitable locations are in hot and dry regions, and the capacity factor is usually higher than for fixed non-concentrating photovoltaics (PV). Technical study was started from the operation principle of MJ cells and continued to the components and system level review to illustrate both the challenges and the opportunities. From the economic view, the cost and risks of CPV-generated electricity were of interest. The material need and the MJ cell cost break-down were derived by combining pieces of information from multiple sources, and similarly to the technical side of the analysis, the investigation was continued to the system level cost breakdown to understand the importance and replaceability of different parts and the whole value chain of CPV. All the findings were utilized in the case studies, where Turkey and Chile were selected for a more in-depth analysis in terms of their suitability for CPV installations. A brief market analysis was carried out, with the goal of showing how numerous factors can impact on the investment feasibility. LCOE, payback times and net present values of a 10 MW CPV installation were calculated based on the assumptions, the sensitivity of which was studied as well. Possibility for solar incentives was ignored. Three scenarios were created: investment taking place in 2014, in 2020 and in 2030. It was found that CPV is very competitive with PV already today in high-DNI Chile, but in Turkey, similar competitiveness could be reached perhaps only in 2030. In Chile, both technologies are already now very competitive also with conventional fossil fuel power sources, but in Turkey, PV could reach this only by 2020. The next step for a more reliable feasibility analysis would be to base the calculations on real offers from CPV manufacturers and on a pilot project for more accurate performance forecasts. CPV could bring a competitive edge compared to PV-competitors in certain regions. |
Abstract (fin): | Keskittävällä aurinkosähköllä (CPV) tarkoitetaan aurinkopaneeleita, joissa optiikan avulla keskitetään auringonvaloa pieniin, huipputehokkaisiin moniliitoskennoihin - näin säästetään kennopinta-alaa, materiaaleja ja pyritään alentamaan sähköntuotannon kustannuksia. |
