Abstract (eng): | This master's thesis studied the use of the alternate path method to prevent the progressive collapse of beam-stiffened horizontal diagrams in an office building. The Eurocode does not give detailed advice on how to apply the alternate path method in structural design or how to address possible dynamic effects related to the collapse. This study aimed to develop recommendations for designing capacity against progressive collapse with the alternate path method. In addition, the aim of this study was to determine the dynamic amplification factors for two different systems for the horizontal diagrams: a system based on steel truss beams and a system based on post-tensioned cast-in-place concrete beams. In addition to the literary research, the applied part of the study was performed as a case study. The case study was carried out with a FEM-program and both static and dynamic analyses were performed to obtain the forces and deformations in the structure. In addition, calculations were preformed to verify the results received from of the FEM-calculations and to compare different simulation methods for the column removal. Analytical calculations based on nonlinear theory were performed to define the dynamic amplification factors according to U.S. design guidelines. The dynamic amplification factors that were obtained from the linear dynamic analyses ranged between 1.05 and 1.5, when the removal of the column was modeled as a descending triangular impulse load. In addition, it was acknowledged that the simulation method used for the column removal affected the dynamic amplification factor. As a result, a dynamic amplification factor of 1.3 was obtained for the concrete beams and a factor of 1.5 for the steel truss beams. Based on the results of the case study, dynamic effects are significant, when applying the alternate path method. Therefore, dynamic effects should be considered in structural design. In future studies, it might be useful to study further the estimation of the magnitude of the dynamic amplification factor to find reasonable methods for guaranteeing a sufficient confidence level against progressive collapse. |
Abstract (fin): | Diplomityössä tutkittiin vaihtoehtoisen kuormansiirtoreitin menetelmän soveltamista toimistorakennuksen kantavan arinapalkiston jatkuvan sortuman hallintaan. Siten dynaamiset vaikutukset tulisi ottaa suunnittelussa huomioon. Jatkotutkimuksissa kannattaa selvittää, miten dynaamista suurennuskerrointa voidaan arvioida mahdollisimman tarkoituksen mukaisesti ja varmasti, jotta rakenteille saataisiin riittävä varmuustaso jatkuvaa sortumaa vastaan. |
