Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): Media corporations of today can't steer their activities like they have traditionally done.
Management based mainly on financial measurements and non-uniformity between units of corporation hinders the possibilities of thriving in the increasingly competitive environment.
Dynamic business environment requires more efficient measures and unified ways of working.

The purpose of master's theses is to develop performance measurement system of a media corporation.
It concentrates on finding common group level process and customer measures for different units of the case organization.
This requires knowledge about the line of business, the processes of case organization's units and the old ways of measuring in the company.

This master's thesis is a qualitative case study which applies the constructive research approach.
A theoretical construction is created and it is further developed with the help of theme interviews done in the case organization.
The construction deals with the creation of a measurement system that supports common synergy and the continuous development of performance measurement by binding the strategies of company's units into the corporate measurement system.
In addition it contains example measures designed for the case organization.

Binding the processes together with development of performance measurement proved to be the most important finding of the study.
So that the measurement system of corporation would be useful for management, processes of different corporate units must be known in a better way.
Only just process information enables comparing measurement results, finding the best practices and distributing them to the whole organization.
Abstract (fin): Nykypäivän mediakonsernit eivät voi ohjata toimintaansa enää niin kuin ne ovat perinteisesti tehneet.
Pääosin talousmittareihin pohjaava johtaminen ja epäyhtenäiset konserniyksiköt haittaavat kiristyvässä kilpailussa menestymistä.
Dynaaminen liiketoimintaympäristö edellyttää tehokkaampia mittareita ja yhteisiä toimintatapoja.

Diplomityön tarkoituksena on kehittää mediakonsernin suorituskyvyn mittausjärjestelmää.
Työ keskittyy löytämään kohdeorganisaation yksiköille yhteiset konsernitason prosessi- ja asiakasmittarit.
Tämä vaatii toimialan ja kohdeorganisaation yksiköiden prosessien, sekä vanhojen mittauskäytäntöjen tuntemista.

Diplomityö on laadullinen tapaustutkimus, jossa käytetään konstruktiivista tutkimusotetta.
Työssä luodaan teoreettinen konstruktio, jota kehitetään edelleen kohdeorganisaatiossa tehtyjen teemahaastattelujen avulla.
Konstruktio käsittelee yhteisen synergiaa tukevan konsernitason mittariston luomista ja suorituskykymittaamisen jatkuvaa kehittämistä sitomalla organisaation yksiköiden strategiat ja prosessit konsernimittaristoon.
Lisäksi se sisältää kohdeorganisaatiolle suunnitellun esimerkkimittariston.

Juuri prosessien sitominen konsernin suorituskyvyn mittaamisen kehittämiseen osoittautui tutkimuksen tärkeimmäksi tulokseksi.
Jotta konsernimittaristosta olisi johtamisen kannalta hyötyä, olisi eri yksiköiden prosessit tunnettava paremmin.
Vasta prosessitieto mahdollistaa mittaustulosten vertailun yksiköiden välillä ja parhaiden toimintatapojen löytämisen sekä niiden levittämisen koko organisaatioon.
