Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): Contract manufacturing, a subtype for outsourcing activity, is widely used and studied in several industries, such as electronics manufacturing or telecommunications, but less in food industry.
The available literature on contract manufacturing reveals that its positive impacts are, among others: cost savings, freed capital, wider product offering, and production flexibilities.
Limited technological capabilities or a lack of capability to invest in manufacturing capacity appear to be factors that affect the make-or-buy decision made by a company.
When deciding not to make, contract manufacturing can be a viable option.

This thesis concentrates on a contract manufacturing process in food industry from the buyer's point of view.
The research methods include a review of the literature and a single case study.
The case consisted of four separate contract manufacturing implementation cases.
The case company in the study is a Finnish premium-brand manufacturer in food industry.
As contract manufacturing in food industry is a rather rarely researched topic, this thesis provides some novel viewpoints in the field of contract manufacturing.

The key findings of the thesis show that contract manufacturing in food industry is affected by the specific features of the industry.
Protection of the brand, extremely high quality and product safety requirements, and a tendency not to openly communicate contract manufacturing practices publicly are some of the challenges that are brought by the industry context.
The main findings in the case indicate that the strategic status of contract manufacturing is lower than that for key activities.
A lack of top management support is another key challenge.
Dedicated resources to contract manufacturing, and challenges in managing contract manufacturing on all levels from a single project to the whole process were seen as impeding its progress.
Production in general is challenging regardless of whether the product is new or existing.
Packing activities were found easier and the most potential contract manufacturing activities for a food manufacturer.
Based on the findings and gathered data, a simplified contract manufacturing framework was developed to support the contract manufacturing process and help with the challenges.
Abstract (fin): Sopimusvalmistus on ulkoisten toimijoiden suorittamaa valmistusta, jonka tavoitteena on puolivalmiste tai valmis tuote.
Sopimusvalmistusta voidaan luonnehtia eräänlaiseksi ulkoistustyypiksi.
Sopimusvalmistusta on laajalti tutkittu esimerkiksi elektroniikka-teollisuudessa, mutta huomattavasti vähemmän elintarviketeollisuuden yhteydessä.
Sopimusvalmistus on tehokas keino laajentaa yritysten tarjoamaa valikoimaa ja lisätä joustavuutta tuotannossa.
Muita positiivisia vaikutuksia, joita sopimusvalmistamisesta haetaan, ovat kustannussäästöt ja vapautettu pääoma.
Rajalliset tekniset valmiudet sekä rajoitettu kyvykkyys tehdä investointeja ovat suurimpia syitä yrityksille lähteä etsimään sopimusvalmistussuhdetta.

Tämä diplomityö keskittyy elintarviketeollisuusyrityksen sopimusvalmistusprosessiin ostavan yrityksen näkökulmasta.
Tutkimuksen kohdeyritys on suomalainen elintarvike-teollisuuden valmistaja.
Tutkimukseen metodologiana käytettiin kirjallisuuskatsausta sekä kuvailevaa tapaustutkimusta.
Näin saatiin näkemykset aiemmista tutkimuksista yhdistettyä tutkitun tapauksen löydöksiin ja johdettua edelleen päätelmät tutkimuksen tuloksista.
Tutkittu tapaus koostui neljästä yksittäisestä sopimusvalmistusprojektista.

Tutkimuksen löydökset osoittavat, että elintarviketeollisuuden erityispiirteet vaikuttavat sopimusvalmistamiseen.
Tuotemerkin suojelu, erittäin korkeat laatuvaatimukset, tuoteturvallisuus, sekä taipumus vähäiseen kommunikointiin harjoitetusta sopimus-valmistuksesta ovat toimintaympäristön tuomia erityispiirteitä.
Tutkittu esimerkkitapaus osoittaa, että sopimusvalmistuksen saama painoarvo yrityksen strategiassa on heikko, yritysjohdon tuki sopimusvalmistukselle on puutteellinen ja toiminnan saamat ohjaus-resurssit ovat vähäiset.
Sopimusvalmistusprojektien johtaminen on haasteellista projektien asettamien erityisvaatimusten takia.
Sopimusvalmistukseen ei kohdisteta tarpeeksi resursseja, joten tulokset jäävät tavoitellusta.
Tämä työ auttaa yrityksiä järkeistämään harjoittamaansa sopimusvalmistustoimintaa.
Pohjaratkaisuna kehittämispyrkimyksille voi toimia työssä ehdotettu lähtökohta sopimusvalmistusprosessista.
