Abstract (eng): | The most common method for controlling mobile devices, such as mobile phones or MP3-players, has been by button input or in some cases touche interfaces. Typically in these situations the user has to look at the device to properly control it. Browsing through hundreds or even thousands of songs or contacts might be cumbersome and not usable or accessible in many situations. Gestural interfaces are still fairly uncommon although much research has been done upon them. By using speech feedback and a novel navigation structure, gestural interfaces would allow the user to control a device "Eyes-free", that is, without looking at it. A method to control a device with a gestural interface using a spherical structure, which is a structure that wraps around the user, has been developed earlier at the Helsinki University of Technology. This thesis introduces the first implementation for this KOALA interface done for Apple's iPhone mobile phone, which shows the possibilities and the functionality of the interface in practice. This proof of concept introduces the 'Funkyplayer' application for the iPhone that allows a user to browse through iPhones music library by utilizing a gestural interface with a spherical ego-centric 3D- auditory menu and speech feedback. Funkyplayer proves that the KOALA-interface can be used as an eyes-free control method in a mobile device even with a greater number of menu items. Eyes-free gesture controlling requires some practice, but it can be efficient when mastered. |
Abstract (fin): | Yleisin tapa kontrolloida mobiililaitteita, kuten MP3-soitinta, on nappien tai joissain tapauksissa kosketusnäytön avulla. Teknillisessä korkeakoulussa on kehitetty tapa kontrolloida laitetta elekäyttöliittymällä käyttäen pallomaista käyttöliittymärakennetta, jossa käyttöliittymä on käyttäjän ympärillä. |
