Abstract (eng): Invasive species have been recognized globally as a major environmental problem.
Phragmites australis, the common reed, is rapidly expanding on the Finnish coast of the Gulf of Finland, lowering its property value and causing ecological consequences.
This invasive expansion can be controlled by strategic management plans.
Hence, the present study introduces a model capable of simulating the expansion of Phragmites australis in order to serve as a tool for environmental management.

This research approaches the matter by firstly providing a method for delineating the common reed coverage from LiDAR data.
Secondly, factors explaining the phenomenon are proposed, analyzed, and aggregated, providing transitional rules for the cellular automata model.
Finally, a cellular automata model is developed to simulate the dynamic of this phenomenon and build scenarios of possible future coverage of Phragmites australis in the study area.

The results demonstrate successful model functionality for producing scenarios of the common reed expansion.
The study indicates also the potential of combining cellular automata and GIS technology to model the expansion of invasive species and provide useful management tool.
Abstract (fin): Hyökkäävät kasvilajit ovat maailmanlaajuisesti tunnistettu suureksi ympäristö ongelmaksi.

Tulokset esittävät onnistuneen järviruo'on leviämistä kuvaavaa mallia.
Tutkimus osoittaa mahdollisuuden leviävien lajien mallintamiseen tarkoitetun soluautomaattimallin sekä GIS-teknologian yhdistämiseen.
Tutkimus tarjoaa myös käyttökelpoisen työkalun niiden hallitsemiseen.
