Abstract (eng): | In my thesis, I examined the Finnish forest and paper industry's potential to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions. I chose to investigate the reduction potential from the viewpoint of environmental management programs and the existing regulatory framework. The objective of the literature study was to develop a basis for comprehensive and consistent approach to evaluate the greenhouse gas emissions contributed by the industry. An important aspect was to clarify the concepts and terminology of greenhouse gas reduction and calculating methods. In the latter part I tested the approach with a realistic case study. As a result of the literature study I have found two fundamentally different methods to calculate carbon dioxide emissions. Firstly, the method used in the e.g. EU Emissions Trading Scheme, which produces consistent information of an organizations emissions from within its selected boundaries. Second method is a life cycle assessment method, which is more comprehensive and ignores any organizational boundaries in the value chain. The life cycle assessment is used to estimate the emissions from the product life cycle point of view. I have found that these methods are both useful for their different purposes. To evaluate the industrial manufacturing possibilities to reduce the emissions, set up a case study of four simplified pulp and paper integrates. I approached the potential from the pulp and paper industry point of view. The primary interest was to examine the emissions reduction potential in energy production, which is the most significant source of CO2. The results indicate that the forest and paper industry still has significant potential to reduce its already relatively low carbon dioxide emissions by simple means of increasing energy efficiency. In case these actions are already taken, the opportunities lying in improved environmental efficiency of fiber procurement and supply chain should be reviewed to reach carbon neutrality. |
Abstract (fin): | Diplomityössäni tutkin Suomen metsäteollisuuden mahdollisuuksia vähentää hiilidioksidipäästöjään. Kasvihuonekaasujen rajoittamiseen liittyvien käsitteiden ja toisistaan poikkeavien standardien mukaisten menetelmien ymmärtäminen ja niiden erottaminen toisistaan on keskeisessä asemassa työn teoriaosassa. Tavoitteenani oli luoda perusteet johdonmukaiselle hiilidioksidipäästöjen laskemiselle todennettavissa olevin menetelmin, arvottaen myös esimerkiksi ostosähkön hiilipäästöt. Diplomityön jälkimmäisessä osassa käsittelen vähennyspotentiaalia todellisen kaltaisten laskentaesimerkkien avulla. Kirjallisuustutkimuksen tuloksena olen hahmotellut kaksi toisistaan poikkeavaa tapaa kartoittaa hiilidioksidipäästöjä. Erityisen huomion kohteena olivat energiantuotannosta aiheutuvat päästöt. Laskennan tulokset osoittavat, että jo entuudestaan vähäpäästöisellä metsäteollisuudella on mahdollisuus rajoittaa merkittävästi hiilidioksidipäästöjään lämpöenergian kulutusta vähentämällä, biopolttoaineita kuivaamalla ja mm. näiden toimien mahdollistamalla fossiilisten polttoaineiden korvaamisella. Näiden toimien lisäksi metsäteollisuuden tulisi kohdistaa huomionsa toimitusketjun tehokkuuden parantamiseen sekä ulkoistetun kuitu- ja muiden materiaalien hankinnan hiilidioksidipäästöjen vähentämiseen. |
