Abstract (eng): | The reverse osmosis (RO) technique is a widely used technique in brackish and sea water desalination, where brine is compressed through a semi-permeable membrane. The main problem in RO technology is the blocking of the membrane due to mineral precipitation (scaling), biofilm formation (bio fouling) or precipitation of colloidal particles or dissolved organic matter (fouling). Membrane blocking can be prevented with a proper pre-treatment or addition of antiscalants. The inhibition mechanisms of antiscalants are threshold inhibition, crystal distortion, dispersion and chelation. When the inhibition mechanisms are known, better antiscalants can be developed. In this work the utilization of quartz crystal microbalance without (QCM) and with energy dissipation (QCM-D) in the study of antiscalants is investigated. QCM is based on pietzoelectric effect where an applied voltage across the crystal makes it to oscillate. The resonant frequency of quartz decreases proportionally to the mass adhered onto the crystal. Viscoelastic properties of adhered mass can be examined with QCM-D. In the literature part of this work, the RO and QCM techniques are shortly presented. Applications of QCM and QCM-D are introduced, emphasizing the utilization of the techniques in liquid phase, especially in the study of reverse osmosis membranes, fouling, scaling and scale inhibition. In the experimental part, QCM and QCM-D systems were optimized for the study of CaCO3 scale inhibition. Three antiscalants, polyacrylic acid (PAA), aminotris (methylenephosphonic acid) (ATMP) and polyaspartic acid (PASP), were compared and their scale inhibition mechanisms were investigated. A QCM test system was built. The quartz crystals were spin-coated uniformly with polystyrene. The antiscalant concentrations were 0.26 ppm, 0.5 ppm, 1 ppm and 2 ppm in optimized test solution with 500 ppm of CaCO3. Unfortunately reproducible QCM measurements were not achieved. With QCM-D, successful measurements were carried out. The adsorption of CaCO3 on polystyrene was found to be nearly reversible with PAA and ATMP, but not with PASP. All the antiscalants in the dosage of 2 ppm inhibited the CaC03 scaling. The best antiscalant in the dosage of 1 ppm was ATMP, then PAA and the least effective was PASP. The order in the effectiveness of PAA and PASP was the same as in the jar test results, proving that QCM-D can be used for the comparison of different antiscalants. The inhibition mechanism of the antiscalants was investigated. Coatings were investigated with atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction after QCM measurements. Since crystalline CaCO3 was not observed, crystal distortion is suggested for the inhibition mechanism for PASP and PAA. The inhibition mechanism for ATMP remained unclarified. |
Abstract (fin): | Käänteisosmoosi on meri- ja murtoveden suolanpoistossa yleisesti käytetty tekniikka, jossa suolapitoista vettä johdetaan puoliläpäisevän membraanin läpi. Tässä työssä tutkittiin kvartsikidevaa'an (QCM) ja dissipaatiota mittaavan kvartsikidevaa'an (QCM-D) käyttöä saostumanestoaineiden tutkimuksessa. QCM:n toiminta perustuu pietsosähköiseen ilmiöön, jossa kiteeseen kytketty jännite saa sen värähtelemään. Värähtelyn taajuuden lasku vastaa kiteeseen kiinnittyneen massan määrää. QCM-D:llä voidaan tutkia kiinnittyneen massan viskoelastisia ominaisuuksia. Työn kirjallisuusosassa esitellään käänteisosmoosi- ja QCM-tekniikoiden perusteet. QCM:n ja QCM-D:n sovellukset käsitellään keskittyen menetelmien käyttöön nestefaasissa, erityisesti käänteisosmoosi-membraanien ja niiden tukkeutumisen tutkimuksessa. Kokeellisessa osassa optimoitiin QCM- ja QCM-D-kokeiden olosuhteita CaCO3:n saostumaneston tutkimiseen. Työssä vertailtiin kolmea eri saostumanestoainetta, polyakryylihappoa (PAA), aminotrismetyleenifosfiinihappoa (ATMP) ja polyaspargiinihappoa (PASP), ja selvitettiin niiden saostumanestomekanismeja. Tutkimusta varten rakennettiin QCM-testisysteemi. Kvartsikiteet päällystettiin polystyreenillä spin-coating-menetelmällä. Mittaukset tehtiin neljällä eri saostumanestoaineen pitoisuudella, 0.26 ppm, 0.5 ppm, 1 ppm ja 2 ppm, optimoidussa 500 ppm:n CaCO3liuoksessa. Valitettavasti QCM-systeemin toistettavuus oli huono, joten optimointi jäi epätäydelliseksi. QCM-D laitteistolla suoritettiin onnistunut koesarja. |
