Abstract (eng): | Recent studies of non-equilibrium fluctuation relations have provided new tools for measuring irreversible processes in microscopic systems. The so-called Jarzynski equality includes a strong statement about irreversible processes and it equates quantities arising from non-equilibrium dynamics with equilibrium quantities. There have been experimental studies concerning the validity of the Jarzynski equality. However, the statistics in these experiments has usually been rather low. In this thesis, we introducee and carry out an experiment with a single-electron device that allows us to verify the Jarzynski equality with high accuracy. The drive on the experimental device is cyclic and thus the equilibrium free energy difference between the starting and ending points in the parameter space vanishes, which allows the direct measurement of the Jarzynski equality in terms of the applied work. The solid state systems such as this have the benefit that they are not degraded during the drive and thus the process can be repeated essentially indefinitely. The experimentally obtained and simulated work distributions are found to be in agreement with the Jarzynski equality. However, we also find theoretically that the Jarzynski equality does not hold in certain cases. The heating caused by the drive increases the temperature of the system and is responsible for the breakdown of the Jarzynski equality. The heating effect is not significant in our experimental setup and thus the Jarzynski equality should hold in our experiment. We conclude that single-electron devices are excellent experimental tools for testing non-equilibrium relations and that the theoretical assumptions for the Jarzynski equality to hold in general must be expanded. |
Abstract (fin): | Viimeaikaiset tutkimukset epätasapainofluktuaatiorelaatioista ovat tuottaneet uusia menetelmiä irreversiibelien prosessien mittaamiseen mikroskooppisissa systeemeissä. Lisäksi Jarzynskin yhtälön pätevyysaluetta on syytä tarkistaa. |
