Reading digital theses in the closed network of the Aalto University Harald Herlin Learning Centre

You can read theses on the Learning Centre customer computers, which are available on all floors.

Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): Ubiquitous computing focuses on integrating the computing power into the environment, allows the environment to be sensitive and responsive to the presence of people and their computing tasks.
Ubiquitous Health Care (UHC) is one important application of Ubiquitous computing.
This term is defined in many abstractive ways, such as the combination of seamless wireless connections and social Omni-presence, or defined by characteristics like automatic biological or environmental information capture, nature user interface, context awareness and proactive services.

UHC is often companied with concept of Glocal Service Ecosystem (GSE).
Services in GSE simultaneously address local nature and admit global mobility and are in certain form which is available anytime and anywhere.
Nonetheless, the contemporary GSE services for seniors are only accessible but not usable anytime and anywhere, due to poor usability, lack of understand of ethics and culture context.

In order to help addressing this matter, a systematic approach is demonstrated in this master thesis to enable UHC services as true GSE for Chinese senior citizens.
With a holistic mind-set, the proposed framework consists of three key elements, namely ethic tailoring, usability evaluation, and cultural adaptation.
In the background section, rapid aging in China and its implications as the motivation of this thesis are discussed.
Barriers of implementing ubiquitous health care services in the past years are investigated as well.
In the methodology section, the three key elements are studied respectively.
In practical section, one existing ubiquitous health care service from a Finnish company is presented as case study.

The service is utilizing proactive alert call system and intended for COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) treatment and prevention.
The proposed service localization metrics are applied to this service, and corresponding improvements are suggested.
Many research materials are from CHI-FEN UBISERV (User-centric Design of Ubiquitous Welfare and Safety Services and Supporting Technologies for China and Finland) project.
