Abstract (eng): | Companies exchange notable amounts of technological information in their innovation work. This phenomena, often referred to as open innovation (Chesbrough, 2003), has been studied extensively in the last decades (Cohen & Levinthal, 1990; Laursen & Salter, 2006; West et al., 2006). However, the antecedents, inhibitors and consequences of open innovation are complex and often neglected in organisation research. This thesis aims at exposing factors explaining open innovation by examining the innovation activities of Finnish companies. The study was conducted in 2009 and is based on a cross-industry research of 25 companies. The objective of this paper is to describe information exchange of Finnish technology companies in various industrial contexts. This study is descriptive and exploratory in nature, and its theoretical base is broad. The initial point of view follows the thought of Chesbrough (2003), but observations from before and after are brought into discussion. The companies were studied with a survey, and six companies were examined further with interviews and within-case analyses. The collected survey data was compared to the findings of the case analyses. The findings of this study show that various contextual factors may affect the attractiveness and effectiveness of implementing openness into the innovation processes of companies. These findings were compared to the previous open innovation research. Conclusively, the findings suggest that the open innovation paradigm does not describe the innovation in Finnish companies accurately. |
Abstract (fin): | Yritysten välinen avoimeksi innovoinniksi kutsuttu (Chesbrough, 2003) informaation vaihto innovaatiotyössä on viime vuosikymmeninä laajasti tutkittu ilmiö (Cohen & Levinthal, 1990; Laursen & Salter, 2006; West et al., 2006). Tutkimus suoritettiin vuonna 2009.
