Abstract (eng): | E-mail has become one of the most popular ways of communication in business life, and Microsoft Outlook is the most common e-mail client worldwide. Many companies use also other software systems to manage their resources and functions of business. Integrating these processes to Outlook can make every day work much more efficient. In this thesis an application framework will be created. Its main purpose is to make developing add-ins for Microsoft Outlook easier. The basic functionalities of the framework include updating the add-in based on the information of the sender of the selected e-mail. No limits are set for the application developers for extending the se functionalities. The framework only dictates the overall architecture to be modular by separating the service from the user interface and by forcing the UI to use Composite WPF, .Net's library for building modular user interfaces. The framework is based on Layered and Component-Based architectural patterns. The best aspects of both are used to improve the quality and to get more reusability. The most important thing for gaining the modularity is the usage of the Managed Extensibility Framework, .Net's new technology for runtime extensibility. Two reference implementations are created to help the evaluation. The evaluation is divided in to two parts. The first part considers the framework as a separate application and evaluates its design, architecture and implementation. Also the used patterns, their suitability and the level of utilization are under evaluation. The second part of the evaluation focuses on the benefits that can be gained by using this framework. It also evaluates how well the framework fulfils the principals of a well-designed framework. |
Abstract (fin): | Sähköpostista on tullut yksi liike-elämän suosituimmista kommunikointi tavoista, ja Microsoft Outlook on maaliman suosituin sähköpostisovellus. Tärkein asia modulaarisuuden saavuttamiseksi on .NET:in uuden teknologian Managed Extensibility Frameworkin käyttö. Arvioinnin helpottamiseksi on toteutettu kaksi liitännäistä sovelluskehyksen ympärille. Arviointi on jaettu kahteen osaan. |
