Abstract (eng): | This master's thesis focuses on the optimal control of a two-echelon inventory system. The same problem has previously been modelled in numerous researches since most companies struggle with performance improvement, the coordination and integration of the production, inventory, and distribution operations. However, most of this previous research is based largely on theory and lacks practical examples. Through these models, one can demonstrate the connection between production capacity, cost of carrying inventories, and delivery performance. Furthermore, the object of network planning and control is to achieve balance between demand and supply, The theoretical part of the study focuses on the relevant literature on inventory planning and control, in the field of optimal control of inventory-production-inventory networks in particular. In the literature review, a framework is presented which works as a basis for modelling the optimal inventory-production network. Moreover, in the empirical part of the thesis, the findings of the literature review are applied in practice on the real life case of a Finnish semi-finished goods manufacturer. Based on the real production-inventory network, a discrete-event system simulation model is built, which can he used for evaluating the effect that different kinds of decision parameters have on the overall performance of the system. The results of the research imply that the same overall performance of the system can be achieved with various combinations of decision parameters. By changing the location of the stock, the amount of the production capacity, or inventory control logic, we were able to affect the customer's perceived delivery performance. Through the research conducted, which was based on a specific historical sample, an optimal combination of decision parameters was found and a tool for continuous weekly replenishment planning achieved. Based on the analysis of the simulation experiments, the case company decided to launch a steering model, which is based on discrete-event system simulation. The case company has estimated that the developed model has reduced costs by better delivery performance, fewer assets tied in inventories, and better capacity utilization. |
Abstract (fin): | Diplomityö käsittelee optimaalisen kaksitasoisen varastoverkoston suunnittelua ja ohjausta. Simulointitutkimuksen analyysin perusteella kohdeyritys otti käyttöön tapahtumapohjaiseen simulointiin perustuvan varasto-ohjausmallin. Kohdeyrityksessä on arvioitu, että käyttöön otettu malli on tuottanut merkittäviä säästöjä paremman palvelutason, pienemmän varastoihin sitoutuneen pääoman ja paremman tuotantokapasiteetin käyttöasteen muodossa. |
