Abstract (eng): | The subject of this thesis is a discrete-event simulation study of a new assembly plant that produces heavy machinery. The objectives are to confirm static calculations of the correct number of assembly cells and to study the effects crane resources have on inter-departure time and lead time. Labour requirements are also discussed, although they are not a primary point of interest. The theoretical part of this thesis offers an introduction to basic tools and methods of discrete-event simulation. A more practical approach to the aforementioned follows in the form of an introduction to basic elements and properties of Simul8 simulation software. The application of these elements in modelling the factory is discussed in detail. Among the most important aspects of the modelling are the use of work centre elements as work phases instead of working units and the custom result collection system that necessarily follows from this modelling approach. Other points of interest are the modelling of processes that go on outside simulation time and robust handling of resources in a complex model. These modelling techniques that overcome or augment some of the limitations of standard Simul8 repertoire can be applied in other modelling projects, and have been described in adequate detail to replicate them. Visual Logic source code is listed in an appendix of this thesis. The modelling solutions are in some cases explained using parts of the actual model, and in some cases using more generalized examples. To protect confidential information, some results of simulation experiments are represented as scaled or normalized figures or as graphs devoid of numbers. The actual explicit results are enclosed in a non-public appendix of this thesis. Recommendations for the number of assembly cells and cranes are given as conclusions drawn from the results of the simulation experiments. Also, a recommendation for a new source of starting impulse for a subassembly is given. The actual results provide estimates for average lead times and inter-departure times, and for utilizations of selected key resources. |
Abstract (fin): | Diplomityössä käsitellään uuden raskaita koneita tuottavan kokoonpanotehtaan tutkimusta tapahtumapohjaisen simulaation avulla. |
