Abstract (eng): | The aim of this thesis was to examine the role and potential of residential households in electricity demand flexibility provision. First, current research on demand flexibility was reviewed and a framework for viewing households as smart systems that enable demand flexibility, was built. The case study was conducted in a detached house in Porvoo, where Posintra/STOK development company has been conducting studies on intellingent house automation control. Together with the owner of the house, different electricity demands were identified and the most relevant in terms of providing demand flexibility were selected for the measurement phase. The measurements were conducted by the household owner during the latter part of the year 2013. The measurement data was used to provide visibility into the relative and absolute electricity demands associated with common household appliances. The demands were categorized into controllable categories, according to their mode of operation, and estimates for demand flexibility potential were calculated for each appliance based on their consumption curves and assessments on how much each demand could be shifted. These could then be compared to estimates of the residential sector potential found in current literature. The procedure followed in planning and conducting the measurements on disaggregated household electricity demand was used as a basis for proposing a model framework for conducting similar studies in the future. The relevance of such studies is likely to increase, as demand flexibility gains more value as electricity systems need to be able to operate with an increasing share of generation from intermittent renewable sources. Results from similar studies haven't been previously available from Finland and as such this paves the way for more research in the area. The results have unique value in reflecting actual household electricity demand instead of being derived from mathematical simulations, as has been the case in studies identified in previous literature. |
