Abstract (eng): | Managing single projects according to their specifications is not enough for a project-oriented organisation to succeed. Organisations need to be able to select the projects that are most likely to help them achieve their vision, as well as to carefully manage the set of on-going projects as an entity in order to continuously reach the strategic objectives. This thesis examines the management of these multi-project environments. The focus is on two project types, internal development projects and product development projects. These are referred mutually as development projects. The research problem of this thesis is "How organisations manage multiple projects and how they succeed in it?". The problem is divided into three sub-questions. First, the aim is to clarify, which approaches organisations use in managing multiple projects. The second objective is to define, what kind of multi-project management is considered successful and how successful organisations are in multi-project management. Finally, the thesis examines, which factors are related to success in multi-project management. The research consists of literature analysis and empirical study based on the results of an extensive questionnaire survey. In the literature review, findings from change management, innovation management, project management, and multi-project management research are examined and hypothesis on factors that relate to success in managing multiple development projects. In the empirical part of the thesis, multi-project management approaches of organisations and their successfulness are analysed and hypothesis on factors related to success is tested empirically. According to the results, project management has become an established practice in implementing development efforts. Organisations have also started to adopt multi-project management practices, but many still view development projects as independent and isolated. However, a need for multi-project perspective is well recognised. Also organisations' success in managing multiple projects varies. Issues related to multi-project management success include managing single projects in a solid manner, having high-quality information on projects, managing the link between strategy and projects, evaluating project ideas systematically, reviewing projects as entities, and developing multi-project management practices that match the individual needs of the organisation while indicating some level of regularity and systematics. |
Abstract (fin): | Projektimaisen toiminnan yleistyessä organisaatioissa pelkkä yksittäisten projektien hallinta ei riitä projektitoiminnan menestyksen takaamiseksi. Tutkimuksen perusteella projektinhallinnasta on tullut yleinen tapa toteuttaa kehittämistoimenpiteitä. Organisaatioissa on otettu käyttöön myös projektiportfolion johtamiseen liittyviä käytäntöjä. Monet johtavat silti yhä projekteja yksittäisinä ja toisistaan riippumattomina. Tarve portfoliotason tarkastelunäkökulmalle on kuitenkin tunnistettu laajalti. Organisaatioiden menestys projektiportfolioiden johtamisessa vaihtelee. Menestykseen liittyviksi tekijöiksi tutkimuksessa tunnistettiin muun muassa toimiva projektinhallintatapa, projekti-informaation korkea laatu, projektien yhdistäminen strategiaan, projekti-ideoiden systemaattinen arviointi ja vertailu, projektikokonaisuuden tarkastelu ja organisaatiokohtaisten projektiportfolion johtamiskäytäntöjen kehittäminen. |
