Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng):This thesis aims to understand the implications of a completed workshop with the goal of achieving an improved balance between exploitation and exploration under the organization's structural settings.
The main research question of the thesis is "How should a firm strive towards a cost leadership position through the balancing of exploitation and exploration?"

The theoretical framework is constructed on the exploration and exploitation trade-off (March, 1991).
In addition, concepts concerning organization structure are studied in the literature review.
The synthesis of the literature illustrates how the organizational balance between exploration and exploitation is determined by structural factors.
This balance can potentially be shifted towards a desired direction with the help of development projects.

The empirical data was gathered from the case firm using a participatory study.
The research method was that of a clinical study.
In the empirical part, a pilot development workshop was carried out as a part of a development program.
In the workshop, development targets for cost reduction were identified and development ideas were presented.
Key results of the development program included allocating a cost leadership development budget for each devision.
An innovation competition for striving towards a cost leadership position was also carried out as a result of the development program.

The pilot workshop acted as a good internal marketing tool for the cost leadership development program.
According to the empirical study, central steering and management associated with development efforts used to gain cost leadership within a firm that has a divisionalized structure seems to have a positive effect on the level of exploration.
Abstract (fin):Tämän diplomityön tarkoituksena on ymmärtää yrityksen organisaatiorakenteen puitteissa seurauksia, joita toteutetulla työpajalla oli uuden tutkimisen ja vanhan hyödyntämisen tasapainon parantamiseksi.
Diplomityön päätutkimuskysymys on: "Miten yrityksen tulisi tavoitella kustannusjohtajuutta tasapainottamalla uuden tutkimista ja vanhan hyödyntämistä?"

Diplomityön teoreettinen viitekehys perustuu uuden tutkimisen ja vanhan hyödyntämisen kompromissiin (March, 1991).
Diplomityön kirjallisuuskatsauksessa tarkastellaan lisäksi organisaatiorakenteeseen liittyviä käsitteitä.
Kirjallisuuskatsauksen synteesi havainnollistaa, miten organisaation tasapaino uuden tutkimisen ja vanhan hyödyntämisen välillä määräytyy yrityksen rakenteellisten tekijöiden perusteella.
Tätä tasapainoa voidaan mahdollisesti siirtää toivottuun suuntaan kehitysprojektien avulla.

Tutkimuksen empiirinen aineisto kerättiin tapausyrityksestä osallistuvan tutkimuksen avulla.
Tutkimusmenetelmänä käytettiin kliinistä tutkimusta.
Empiirisessä osiossa toteutettiin pilottityöpaja osana laajempaa kehitysohjelmaa.
Työpajassa tunnistettiin kehityskohteita ja esitettiin kehitysideoita kustannusten vähentämiseksi.
Kehitysohjelman tärkeimpinä tuloksina olivat kustannusjohtajuuden kehitysbudjetin allokointi yrityksen kullekin divisioonalle, sekä kustannusjohtajuuteen keskittyvän innovaatiokilpailun järjestäminen.

Pilottityöpaja toimi hyvänä sisäisen markkinoinnin välineenä kustannusjohtajuuteen tähtäävässä kehitysohjelmassa.
Empiirisen tutkimuksen perusteella näyttää siltä, että keskitetty ohjaus ja hallinto yrityksessä, jossa on divisionaalinen rakenne, lisää uusien mahdollisuuksien tutkimisen määrää.
