Abstract (eng): The effect of peeling check depth on birch plywood bonds was examined using the European EN 314 standard method and Automated Bonding Evaluation System (ABES).
Differences in peeling check depths were given to the tested veneers by sanding off different amounts of surface from both sides of the sheets.
This way other characteristics such as check frequency were kept the same for all of the samples.

The tests executed using the EN 314 procedures suggested that peeling check depths indeed affect birch plywood bond evaluations.
The deeper the checks were the less force was required to break the test specimens.
Same kinds of outcomes were received for both wet and dry samples.
Differences between the amounts of peeling check depth related influence were noticed based on peeling check orientations.
Samples with open checks were heavily affected by check depth differences whereas check depths disturbed tests performed on samples with closed checks a lot less.

The ABES tests produced different results compared to the EN 314 evaluations.
The tests hinted towards a possibility that the shear strengths did not vary based on check depths in the industrial check depth range.
Abstract (fin): Sorvaushalkeamien syvyyden vaikutusta koivuvanerin liimasaumojen laatuun tutkittiin EN 314 -standardimenetelmällä ja tämän lisäksi Automated Bonding Evaluation System (ABES) -testauksella.
Eroja sorvaushalkeamasyvyyksissä luotiin hiomalla viiluja molemmilta puolilta erilaisissa suhteissa.

Halkeamien suunnalla havaittiin olevan vaikutus siihen, miten paljon halkeamasyvyydet vaikuttivat vetolujuuksiin.
Kappaleet, joissa halkeamat olivat avautuvia, reagoivat halkeamasyvyysvaihteluihin voimakkaammin kuin kappaleet, joissa halkeamat olivat sulkeutuvia.

ABES-koestukset toivat mukanaan erilaisia tuloksia verrattuna EN 314 -testeihin.
Koestusten mukaan on mahdollista, että vetolujuudet eivät enää muuttuneet sorvaushalkeamien myötä, kun teollisuuden halkeamasyvyydet oli saavutettu.
