Abstract (eng): | Signposting for bicycle traffic is a self-evident component of bicycle infrastructure in the city of Helsinki. Nevertheless, many of the cyclists and politicians are unsatisfied with its present. In this study, signposting for bicycle traffic will be assessed and improvements will be presented for the city of Helsinki. The focus is in central Helsinki and its surrounding urban areas. The present signposting system in Helsinki was developed in the late 1970's, subsequent to when signposting was permitted by Finnish legislation. Since the beginning, the city has continuously improved signposting on the bicycle paths. However, the improvements have mainly considered increasing number of the signposts and creating the whole city covering master plan, but have not considered improvements on a system level. The signposts and signposting methods have remained the same over the years. Signposting for bicycle traffic is an essential component of infrastructure in a great number of cycling friendly cities. For this study, the European cities of Stockholm, Copenhagen, Munich, and Groningen were highlighted as forerunners in regard to their signposting systems, because of the improvements they made over the last ten years regarding this infrastructure. Specifically, these European cities were chosen for benchmarking and international comparison. In addition, this study also researched other cycling friendly cities around Europe. In this study, the signposting system in Helsinki will be compared with research-based practices. Specific improvements of the signposting system and the signposting methods will be highlighted in order to achieve the better level of service for the city of Helsinki. |
Abstract (fin): | Pyöräliikenteen opastaminen on omaksuttu Helsingissä itsestään selväksi osaksi pyöräliikenteen infrastruktuuria. Helsingin pyöräteiden opastamista on parannettu aina 70-luvun lopulta tähän päivään saakka. Parannukset ovat kuitenkin koskeneet lähinnä opasteiden määrällistä lisäämistä ja kokonaissuunnitelmien tuottamista eikä niinkään järjestelmätason kehittämistä, kuten opastevalikoiman lisäämistä tai opastusperiaatteiden tarkistamista. Pyöräliikenteen edelläkävijämaissa opastus on tyypillisesti luonnollinen osa pyöräliikenteen infrastruktuuria. Lisäksi täydentävää tietoutta on etsitty muista Eurooppalaisista edelläkävijäkaupungeista kaupungeista. |
