Abstract (eng): | Olkiluoto 1 and 2 (OL1 and OL2) boiling water reactors were built at the time when load following capability was not considered especially important. However, in recent years the load following capability of OL1 and OL2 reactors has aroused discussion. Operating the reactor at full power may not always be economically the most profitable strategy to produce electricity due to the variations in the price of electricity. Performing load following in a nuclear power plant requires not only accurate planning in advance but also taking different safety aspects into consideration. In this thesis, the load following capability of OL1 and OL2 reactors is studied. A shell script running SIMULATE-3 reactor simulator software is developed in order to simulate load following more effectively. Different load following scenarios are studied using the shell script developed and the main attention is paid on the reactor physical safety factors such as thermal margins and stability. The effects of selecting different control rods are also studied as well as the possible effects on cycle loading strategy due to load following. According to the calculations performed there are no immediate reactor physical limitations for performing the load following between power levels 60 % and 100 % although in some cases the boundary conditions related to the rate of power changes may have to be changed to be restrictive. In most cases the thermal margins and stability indices are admissible when using fast power ramps. In some cases the safety margins may be too limiting when using certain strategy but the safety margins can be affected by selecting and driving the control rods differently, regulating coolant flow and varying the rate of power changes. In most cases, load following is more difficult on lower power levels than on higher power levels because control rods have to be driven more and the safety margins are typically lower during the power ramps. The effects of load following on the load strategy must be taken into account if the energy not produced due to load following is of order >100 EFPH at the end of the cycle. Otherwise the effects on the reloading strategy are negligible. |
