Abstract (eng): | One of the major issues having an effect on the quality of the product LVL (Laminated veneer Lumber) is its gluing process. The main quality criteria are bending strength, modulus of elasticity and wood fracture percentage. If there is an insufficient amount of adhesive in the product, there is a huge risk that some of the quality criteria are not met. This is the reason why glue is being used in huge amounts, which is not the most cost-effective production method. The objective in this Master's Thesis was to determine the influence of glue reduction on bending strength, modulus of elasticity and wood fracture percentage. Additional objectives were to determine the same effect on same variables with an optional glue spreading method and to determine if the current (stripe coater) glue application method should be replaced with a curtain coater. It was discovered that until further notice the old glue spreading method is the best way to continue production of LVL, only with a minor change (10 - 20 g/m2 ) of adhesive amount. This reduction will not impair the quality but will result in savings through production costs. The results of the optional new glue spreading method were not significantly inferior and it would need much more research and development to actually be more cost-effective than the old method. |
Abstract (fin): | Yksi tärkeimmistä Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) -tuotteen, eli kansankielellä kertopuun, laatuun vaikuttava tekijä on sen liimausprosessi. |
