Reading digital theses in the closed network of the Aalto University Harald Herlin Learning Centre

You can read theses on the Learning Centre customer computers, which are available on all floors.

Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng):The objective of this study is to define how a structural design company which has operations in Finnish and Russian markets can better position itself in the ecosystem of the construction design industry.

The topic is approached through ecosystem literature, resource-based view and transaction cost theory.
The literature review guided data collection and data analysis.
Primary data was collected in 26 interviews.
In addition, secondary data, such as industry reports and web pages were used.

Several ecosystem architectures that co-exist in the Finnish and Russian markets are identified.
The study suggests that a customer chooses a specific ecosystem based on considering the trade-off between desired quality and low coordination cost.
Coordination capabilities are seen as a potential solution to this quality-coordination dilemma.
Coordination capabilities can be located either on the customer side or on the designer side.
Depending on which side they are, and on the institutional context of the market, a different ecosystem architecture has ecosystem advantage.

The optimal solution for the case company is the ecosystem architecture that ensures both quality and low coordination costs by having coordination capabilities on the design side.
By acquiring these capabilities the case company would reach a position in which it faces only modest competition.
In second-round interviews the decision makers of the case company expressed their positive attitude towards the solution of the study.

Although several studies suggest that resource-based view and transaction cost approach are actually complementary theories, the results of this study show that there is a dilemma between coordination cost and cost of quality.
Furthermore, the study introduces a concept of ecosystem advantage that has potential to bring something new to the management research.
This could be further developed in future studies.
Abstract (fin): Tämä tutkimus tarkastelee, miten rakennesuunnitteluyritys, joka toimii Suomen ja Venäjän markkinoilla, voi parantaa positiointiaan rakennusteollisuuden suunnittelun ekosysteemissä.

Aihetta lähestytään ekosysteemikirjallisuuden, transaktiokustannusteorian ja resurssi-perusteisen teorian näkökulmasta.
Kirjallisuuskatsaus ohjasi tutkimuksen datankeruuta ja analyysiä.
Primäärinen data kerättiin 26 haastattelussa.
Tutkimuksessa käytettiin myös sekundääristä dataa kuten toimialaraportteja ja nettisivuja.

Tutkimuksessa todetaan, että Suomen ja Venäjän markkinoilla käytetään molemmissa useita ekosysteemityyppejä.
Ekosysteemityypin valintaan liittyy aina valinta sen suhteen, halu-taanko painottaa suunnittelun laatua vai alhaisia koordinaatiokustannuksia.
Tutkimuksen tuloksena ehdotetaan, että koordinaatiokyky voisi ratkaista asiakkaan laatu-koordinaatio-dilemman.
Se, mikä ekosysteemi tuottaa parhaiten lisäarvoa, määräytyy sen mukaan, onko koordinaatiokyky projektissa asiakkaalla vai suunnittelupuolella.
Myös institutionaalinen konteksti vaikuttaa siihen, millä ekosysteemityypillä on ekosysteemietu.

Tutkimuksen mukaan ekosysteemityyppi, jossa koordinointikyky suunnittelupuolella takaa sekä halutun laadun että alhaisen koordinaatiokustannuksen, on optimaalinen ratkaisu case-yritykselle.
Koordinaatiokyvyn kehittäminen takaa case-yritykselle parhaan mahdollisen kilpailuaseman.
Yrityksen päätöksentekijät ilmaisivat positiivisen asenteensa tutkimuksen ratkaisua kohden toisen kierroksen haastatteluissa.

Vaikka useat tutkimukset ehdottavat, että resurssiperusteinen teoria ja transaktio-kustannusteoria ovat oikeastaan toisiaan täydentäviä, tämän tutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat, että koordinaatiokustannusten ja laatukustannusten välillä on dilemma.
Lisäksi, tutkimus esittelee uuden konseptin, ekosysteemiedun, jolla on potentiaalia tuoda jotain uutta johtamiskirjallisuuteen, jos konseptia kehitetään pidemmälle.
