Logging on to the customer computers

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng):The main goal of this thesis was to study the needs of data warehousing in the purchasing department of Cargotec Corporation.
This objective was further divided into three parts: To expose the amount of usage of the current supplier data warehouse, to propose short term actions to the development of the current data warehouse and to study the long term need of a new, more advanced supplier data warehouse.

Before the empirical research, a literature review was conducted.
The purpose of the literature review was to familiarise reader to the concept of data warehousing, and to theoretically justify the need of such systems.
This was firstly approached by introducing mechanisms how a parent company can add or destroy value of business units, and how parent companies can arrange their relationships with business units.
These different relationships can also be called corporate strategies.
Data warehouses were found to increase the possibility for parents to add value to business units, and also to help companies to adapt a more efficient corporate strategy.
In addition, it was shown that the implementation of a data warehouse is leading to improved purchasing performance.

This thesis also introduced case studies about the savings and costs of an advanced supplier data warehouse.
Calculated savings were found to be significantly higher than the implementation costs of a data warehouse.
Thus, the conclusion based on the case studies was that Cargotec should invest to the new, more advanced supplier data warehouse.

The empirical research of this thesis was conducted with both interviews and a questionnaire based on the results of the interviews.
The questionnaire was send to the whole purchasing organisation of Cargotec.
The results revealed the amount and ways of use of the current data warehousing system.
The system was used significantly more often in group headquarters than in other organisational layers.
However, the main point of the questionnaire was to offer recommendations to short term and long term data warehousing related actions.

The results offered a list of desired new attributes and a list of experienced problems of the current data warehouse.
Cargotec should start to develop the current system based on these findings.
The results also stated that the need of an advanced data warehouse is only minor outside group headquarters.
However, the need of an advanced data warehouse was clear in group headquarters and the savings offered by it were found to be significant.
Thus, the overall conclusion was that Cargotec should invest to a new advanced data warehouse.
Abstract (fin):Diplomityön keskeisin tavoite oli tutkia tietovarastoinnin tarpeita Cargotecissa.
Tämä tavoite jaettiin työssä kolmeen osaan: tutkia nykyisen toimittajatietovaraston käyttöä, suositella siihen lyhyen tähtäimen kehittämistarpeita ja paljastaa onko Cargotecissa tarvetta implementoida uusi, kehittyneempi toimittajatietovarasto.

Työn kirjallisuusosion tarkoituksena oli esitellä tietovarastoinnin käsite sekä teoreettisesti perustella tietovarastojen käyttö.
Ongelmaa ruvettiin ratkaisemaan tutkimalla miten emoyhtiö voi lisätä tai tuhota toimintayksikköjen arvoa, ja millaisia suhteita emoyhtiö voi rakentaa toimintayksikköjen kanssa.
Näitä erilaisia suhteita voidaan kutsua myös yritysstrategioiksi.
Tietovarastojen todettiin lisäävän emoyhtiön mahdollisuuksia lisätä toimintayksikköjen arvoa, ja myös auttavan yrityksiä omaksumaan tehokkaampi yritysstrategia.
Näiden lisäksi tietovarastoinnin todettiin ajavan yrityksiä tehokkaampaan ostotoimintaan.

Diplomityössä esiteltiin myös tapaustutkimuksia toimittajatietovarastoinnin mahdollistamista säästöistä ja sen aiheuttamista kustannuksista.
Säästöjen todettiin olevan huomattavasti kustannuksia korkeammat, ja tästä johtuen tapahtumatutkimuksien perusteella Cargotecin tulisi investoida uuteen kehittyneempään toimittajatietovarastoon.

Työn empiirinen osuus käsitti haastatteluja ja niiden perusteella rakennetun kyselyn.
Kysely lähetettiin koko Cargotecin osto-organisaatiolle.
Tulokset paljastivat miten, ja kuinka paljon nykyistä toimittajatietovarastoa käytetään.
Sen käyttö todettiin olevan huomattavasti tiheämpää pääkonttorissa, kuin muilla organisaatiotasoilla.
Tutkimuksen merkittävimpinä tuloksina olivat kuitenkin suositukset niin lyhyen, kuin pitkän tähtäimen tietovarastointiin liittyviin päätöksiin.

Tulosten perusteella työssä rakennettiin lista toivotuista uusista toimittajatietovaraston ominaisuuksista sekä lista nykyisen järjestelmän ongelmista.
Cargotecin tulisi aloittaa nykyisen systeemin kehittäminen näiden listojen mukaisesti.
Tulokset paljastivat myös että kehittyneemmän tietovarastoinnin tarve pääkonttorin ulkopuolella on vain vähäistä.
Pääkonttorissa uuden kehittyneemmän toimittajatietovaraston tarve oli kuitenkin huomattava.
Ja koska tapaustutkimukset osoittivat toimittajatietovaraston tarjoavan huomattavia kustannussäästöjä, lopullisena suosituksena oli, että Cargotecin tulisi sijoittaa uuteen kehittyneempään toimittajatietovarastoon.
