Abstract (eng): Development of health technology provides new solutions for monitoring the health of people.
Concerning health care, especially the growing amount of elderly people will be a huge challenge in Finnish society.
Technology can help people who need monitoring of their condition.
Also nurses can take advantage of the new technology.
In this Master's thesis, there have been developed a bed-monitoring system that can be used for monitoring the condition of the person lying on a bed.

The monitoring system is based on piezoelectric sensors, which are used to measure the forces caused by a person lying on a bed.
The monitoring of the heart is based on the ballistocardiographic (BCG) method, which measures the forces caused by the heart function.
The biosignals obtained from sensors are processed in a microcontroller, and with digital algorithms it is possible to get information of the condition of a person.
The measuring system is small in size and wireless, so it is easy to install.

The system was tested with test persons in a laboratory, and the results show, that the system reached its goal to monitor the presence of the person in bed, his heart beats, turning in bed and respiration.
Abstract (fin): Terveysteknologian kehitys tarjoaa uusia ratkaisuja ihmisten terveydentilan seuraamiseen.
