Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng):This Master's thesis is realized as an assignment from Pelti- ja Rautatyö E. Salminen Oy. The objective of this work was to improve the company's production and procurement in a way that minimizes redundant work and makes working more meaningful. This creates a good basis for profitability and continuation for the company's future. All the problems were meant to be solved without excessive investments. The study emphasizes qualitative methods over quantitative methods.

The theoretical part of this work focuses on basic principles of layout designing and procurement as well as practical methods such as JIT, 5S and continuous improvement. These methods are also used as part of the most successful production systems in the world.

The research methods used were written inquiry, interviews, performance measurement, observation and data collection. The workstation layouts and storage systems were enhanced using these methods. An order form was developed for the company's incoming orders. This made billing and monitoring the work much easier. The procurement and offer calculations were enhanced by a computer based offer calculation form. Different kinds of storage systems for tools and materials were also created by computer aided design (CAD). These storage systems were manufactured by the company.

As a result of this work, tools for making production and procurement more rational were created. These solutions have been praised by the workers who were all able to make a difference to the outcome that also created a basis for future development. The company will emphasize the meaning of continuous small improvements in the future.
Abstract (fin):Tämä diplomityö on tehty Pelti- ja Rautatyö E. Salminen Oy:n toimeksiannosta. Työn tavoitteena oli kehittää kohdeyrityksen tuotantoa ja hankintoja siten, että ylimääräinen turha työ poistetaan ja työnteosta tulee entistä mielekkäämpää. Näin luodaan hyvä kannattavuuden ja jatkuvuuden pohja yrityksen tulevaisuudelle. Ratkaisuista pyrittiin luomaan sellaisia, että niiden toteutus ei vaadi suuria investointeja. Työn tutkimus painottuu enemmän kvalitatiivisiin kuin kvantitatiivisiin menetelmiin.

Työn teoriaosassa perehdytään työpistesuunnittelun ja hankintojen perusperiaatteisiin, sekä maailmalla menestyvien tuotantojärjestelmien osana toimiviin käytännönläheisiin menetelmiin, kuten JOT, 5S ja jatkuva parantaminen.

Tutkimusmenetelminä diplomityössä käytettiin kirjallista kyselyä, keskusteluja, suorituskykymittauksia, havaintoja ja tiedonkeruuta olemassa olevista tiedoista. Näiden menetelmien avulla kehitettiin työpisteitä ja varastointijärjestelmiä. Yritykseen saapuvia tilauksia varten kehitettiin työn seurantaa ja laskutusta helpottava tilauslomake. Yrityksen hankintoja ja tarjouslaskentaa helpottamaan kehitettiin tietokonepohjainen tarjouslaskentalomake. Lisäksi CAD:lla suunniteltiin erilaisia työkalujen ja materiaalien säilytysjärjestelmiä, jotka valmistettiin yrityksen omin voimin.

Työn tuloksena syntyi selkeitä tuotantoa ja hankintoja helpottavia toteutuksia, jotka ovat saaneet kiitosta yrityksen työntekijöiltä. Työntekijät itse saivat vaikuttaa tehtyihin muutoksiin. Nämä toteutukset loivat hyvän pohjan tulevaisuuden kehitystoiminnalle ja jatkossa yritys aikookin painottaa toiminnassaan jatkuvin pienin askelin etenevän kehityksen merkitystä.
