Abstract (eng): | In recent years the economic importance of crude tall oil (CTO) as a raw material for value-added products has increased. The objective of this work was to improve the CTO production at a mill where the CTO losses in black liquor to burning had increased. The prerequisite for the production improvement was to maintain the CTO quality. The studies were divided into two parts. In the first part the problematic process areas from the CTO production point of view were identified by means of constructing a soap mass balance for the whole integrated mill. The second part concentrated on optimising the soap acidulation process efficiency with the hydrodynamic separator (HDS). The mass balance verified that the high CTO losses derived mainly from the low soap acidulation process efficiency, where a high amount of CTO was lost to the reject fraction of the acidulation process and further back to black liquor to burning. In addition to the low soap acidulation efficiency the capacity of the black liquor tanks was observed to be inadequate to separate the soap efficiently at evaporation plant 6. As a conclusion, the potential increase for CTO production of the mill would be more than 30% by decreasing the burning losses. In the second part the lower burning losses were achieved by optimising the soap acidulation process with HDS while maintaining the CTO quality. The increase in process efficiency from 60% to near 95% was obtained by changing the mass balance and reaction conditions in the acidulation. The importance of pH and density of spent acid in the soap acidulation on the CTO yield was fortified by laboratory experiments. The obtained increase in CTO production was estimated to be 6,000 - 8,000 t/a. With regard to efficient soap separation from black liquors the minimal CTO losses can be obtained independent of the chemical composition or the initial amount of soap in the black liquor if the hydrodynamic forces inside the tank are decreased. This can be achieved by increasing the size of the black liquor tanks. Also other possibilities to enhance soap separation have been described in the literature. In addition, in this study the soap skimming control was observed to have a significant impact on the black liquor content in soap and further to the process control of HDS. Therefore the soap skimming and soap handling processes should be controlled more precisely. |
Abstract (fin): | Mäntyöljyn tärkeys arvokkaiden tuotteiden raaka-aineena on kasvanut. Tämän työn tarkoituksena oli lisätä mäntyöljyn tuotantoa eräässä sellutehtaassa, edellytyksenä mäntyöljyn laadun hallinta vähintään entisellä tasollaan. Lähtökohtana tälle työlle oli arvioitua alhaisempi mäntyöljytuotanto johtuen mäntyöljyn polttohäviöiden kasvusta. Tutkimus oli kaksiosainen. Ensin selvitettiin koko tehtaan suopataseen avulla mäntyöljyn polttohäviöiden syy. Toisessa osassa keskityttiin optimoimaan suovan hapotuksen tehokkuutta hydrodynaamisella separaattorilla (HDS). |
