Abstract (eng): | Calender is a paper finishing machine that is used for smoothing out the paper by compressing it between rolls. The calendering results are influenced by the applied force, temperature, time and moisture. The aim of calendering is to produce paper that has the desired surface properties, and to reduce machine directional and cross-directional variation of paper properties. Especially the machine directional control of calenders is at the moment usually done manually based on laboratory measurements. In this thesis methods for automatic model-based control of paper quality with a calendar is investigated. Models of calendering that can be used to improve calender control are presented. Laboratory measurements can be used to further increase the accuracy of the control. Model predictive control has been identified as a good method for calender control. Two quality models, a static and a dynamic one, are developed in this thesis. The parameters of the static models are defined using data collected from earlier trial runs. The accuracy of the model can be increased substantially by implementing a correction factor that utilizes the most recent laboratory measurements. The dynamic model is built using identification methods on on-line data collected from earlier trial runs.Using a Model Predictive Controller that is based on a dynamic model is investigated in practice in trials run with a pilot scale calender. The model is developed through identification and the MPC controller is developed using the Matlab MPC toolbox. The results show that MPC control can be used in calendering and implementing it using Matlab is a good choice. |
Abstract (fin): | Kalanteri on jälkikäsittelykone, jolla tasoitetaan paperia puristamalla sitä telojen välissä. Kalanterointitulokseen voidaan vaikuttaa puristusvoimalla, lämpötilalla, vaikutusajalla ja kosteudella. Kalanteroinnin tavoitteena on halutun paperilaadun tuottaminen ja laadun kone- ja poikkisuuntaisen vaihtelun vähentäminen. Erityisesti kalanterin konesuuntainen säätö perustuu tällä hetkellä suurelta osin laboratoriomittausten perusteella tehtävään manuaaliseen säätöön. Tässä työssä tutkitaan menetelmiä kalanterin automaattiseen mallipohjaiseen laatusäätöön. Työssä esitellään kalanterille ja paperin muokkautumiselle kehitettyjä malleja, joita hyödyntäen kalanterin säätöä voidaan kehittää. Laboratoriomittauksia hyödyntävillä menetelmillä säädön tarkkuutta pyritään edelleen parantamaan. Mallipohjaisista säätömenetelmistä tarkastellaan MPC-säätöä, joka on todettu kalanterin säätöön soveltuvaksi. Työssä kehitetään kalanterille staattinen ja dynaaminen laatumalli. Staattisen mallin parametrien määrittämiseen käytetään aiemmista koeajoista kerättyä dataa. Malliin toteutettu tuoreita laboratoriomittauksia hyödyntävä korjausmenetelmä tarkentaa sen tuloksia merkittävästi. Dynaaminen malli rakennetaan identifioimalla aiemmista koeajoista kerätyn on-line-mittausdatan perusteella. |
