Abstract (eng): | The purpose of this thesis is to examine possibilities for cost-effective fleet assignments. Another aim of this research is to design a simple and easy-to-use tool for the planning and change handling of airline fleet assignments. The principles of and research on demand driven fleet management are examined in the literature review section. Insights from the literature are drawn to explore the general cost structure of companies, and in particular, the cost structure of airline companies. In addition, the demand of passengers and cargo and the formation of demand are examined. Furthermore, the statistical and mathematical methods used in the research are presented. In the empirical section, the supply and use of Finnair's long-haul fleet are examined with statistical methods. Based on the statistical supply a mathematical model is developed. The model determines the most cost-effective type of fleet for each flight that follows the demand at the same time. Furthermore, the savings potential induced by the use of flexible fleet is calculated. The analysis includes estimation of how the flexible use of long-haul fleet could be implemented in Finnair plc's organization. The calculations show that the flexible use of long-haul fleet offers significant potential for savings. However, the developed model cannot be yet fully implemented because of, for example, restrictions in the crew training. |
Abstract (fin): | Työn tarkoituksena oli selvittää lentokonelaivaston kustannustehokkaamman käytön mahdollisuuksia. Tutkimuksessa analysoidaan, miten joustavaa konetyypin valintaa voitaisiin soveltaa Finnair Oyj:n organisaatiossa. |
