Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): Signals travelling between outdoor base stations and mobile phone users located inside buildings are exposed to a building penetration loss.
This thesis studies the consequences of the building penetration loss and the impact of indoor users on the network performance.
The simulated network is a pure High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) network, i.e. a network with no other traffic on the dedicated channels, deployed in a macro cellular network layout.
The aim of the thesis is to study the network performance as a function of the fraction of indoor users.

The network is simulated with a Matlab based simulation tool.
An appropriate propagation model is, together with a building penetration model, taken into consideration within the simulations and the HSDPA performance is presented in terms of user bit rates and cell throughput.
The network performance is evaluated for different amount of traffic, different amount of users located inside buildings and for different cell sizes.

The results of the simulations point out how the network performance depends on the amount of traffic and on the distribution of the users.
The main reasons for the changes in network performance is lack of available power for the high speed channels, attenuation of the high speed channels due to the building penetration and increased transmission delay due to degraded bit rates resulting in queues to be built up.
Further, an indoor margin that can be taken into account when deciding the maximum cell size, is also suggested.

Considering the significance of the results, the simulations could be done with more accurate propagation models and for different building types in order to give more general results.
But, the results presented in this thesis are however assumed to give a fair overall estimate of the HSDPA network performance.
