Abstract (eng): | Numerical simulation programmes have evolved to become an essential part of fire engineering and research. There role is especially valuable where large scale tests are too expensive or impossible to carry out. To correctly model fire spread, one has to know the behaviour of the material solid phase when heated. The modelling should consider both heat transfer and the solid phase reactions of the material. The thermal degradation of material is highly dependent on temperature, and it can be modelled by using the Arrhenius equation. The parameters of this equation define the kinetics of the material. The thermal properties of a material are determined by the heat conduction equation and thermal parameters. These material specific parameters are not commonly known. The parameters are estimated by comparing the resulting modelled values using the parameters against experimental data. Because of the large range of possible values, it may be both time consuming and demanding. Consequently an effective estimation method is needed. In this research, the parameters are estimated using genetic algorithm that is successfully applied especially for finding the important parameters for fire simulations. Practical methods for finding initial values and ranges are also offered. The thermal degradation of various interesting materials for fire simulation are studied and modelled by finding the kinetic and thermal parameters. In addition a number of different reaction schemes are considered. The simulated data is generated by FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator) programme, which is one of the most commonly used fire simulators in the world. The study also includes a research of modelling the oxidation reaction. Oxidation is an exothermic surface reaction that occurs at the end of combustion. Until now, it has been neglected from the fire simulations. Models for oxidation have been obtained from a literature search, and then tested by adding the oxidation reaction to FDS source code. At present only solid phase reactions have been taken into account. For the first time the solid phase parameters are studied this extensive and systematic. This research has a great impact on the fire research. The results of this study offer workable methods and accurate models for being directly utilized in the fire simulations. |
Abstract (fin): | Laskennallisista ohjelmistoista on tullut oleellinen osa palotekniikkaa ja tutkimusta. Parametreja voidaan estimoida sovittamalla malli kokeelliseen dataan. |
