Abstract (eng): | Business cases are used to justify investments especially in information technology (IT), when organizations demand robust evidence to support the justification of business and/or IT changes that are expected to create business value. However, the business case practices vary and are more or less formalized, when they should cope with several kinds of challenges and offer robust information for decision making. The most common challenges relate to identifying and quantifying the expected benefits and thus arguing the business value, managing benefits realization, and finally building a robust recommendation based on the collected information such as benefits, costs, and risks. The motivation for this study is that business cases should offer formalized information for decision making, when there is a need for a formalized business case practise to support portfolio management process, but there is also a need for practice that particularly copes with all the most common challenges and thus produces robust business cases from the different perspectives. The theoretical research from the area of business cases is not very broad whereas there are more practical guides for business case building. The theoretical approaches aim to cope with specific challenges that have been identified. This study synthesizes the theoretical approaches and practical guidelines for business case building, when the different kinds of challenges are synthesized as well. The thesis develops a model for business case practice by identifying the most common challenges and analysing elements from the different approaches that answer the challenges in question. Besides that, the big picture of portfolio management is noticed so that the high level requirements for business cases are determined and the approaches for business value analysis are synthesized to offer support for business case building. The thesis applies constructive research approach and qualitative methods as the business case practice is developed as a part of a case program concerning master data management (MOM), when the empirical data is collected in interviews and in a review work shop. As the business case practises are interpreted also through the business cases built for MOM, the specific challenges and the principles for business value analysis in the case of MOM are examined as well. As a theoretical implication this study synthesizes the previous research by building a model of a business case practise that answers to the different challenges identified, and is also applicable in the practical building of business cases. |
Abstract (fin): | Business caseja (suom. esim. liiketoimintahanke) käytetään laajasti perustelemaan investointeja erityisesti informaatioteknologian (IT) alueella, kun yritykset vaativat vankkaa perustelua tukemaan liiketoiminta- ja/tai IT-muutosten hyväksymistä tavoitellessaan liiketoiminnan arvon kasvua. |
