  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng):The present thesis focuses on the development of a balanced scorecard based measurement system.
The balanced scorecard framework is a strategic performance measurement framework, which emphasizes depicting and measuring the strategy of a company with a balanced and linked set of measures.
The systems developed according to it have proved to be useful in strategic management as they have enabled clarifying and communicating strategy, motivating employees, making coherent plans, and receiving strategic feedback.

The present study was carried out as action research in a division of a Finnish technology based company.
The study aims at contributing to the case company's measurement system project and at testing and developing the understanding related to the design process of balanced scorecards.
The research problem can be presented with the following questions. a) How should a balanced scorecard be designed? b) What kind of a balanced scorecard based measurement system would be suitable for the case division and how it should be used?

The objectives of the study are:. 1. to analyze and summarize existing knowledge on strategic performance measurement and on balanced scorecards, their development and use. 2. to describe and analyze the design process used in the case company. 3. to develop a process model for the design of a balanced scorecard. 4. to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the case company's preliminary measurement system. 5. to give recommendations on the development of the preliminary system and on the use of the finished system.

The study is based mainly on qualitative information collected from literature and the case company's internal documents as well as by conducting several interviews and taking part in project workshops and meetings.

The case study shows that the design of a balanced scorecard is a complicated task.
Especially the building of a valid strategy map was found challenging and many rounds of iteration were needed.
A process model for the design is developed according to the findings of the theoretical and empirical analyses.
It includes a new method for the creation of the measures and an analysis framework for analyzing the quality of the measures, scorecards and the system as a whole.
The case company's preliminary measurement system is also analyzed and recommendations are given on its development and use.
The analysis of the measurement system is confidential.
Abstract (fin):Diplomityö keskittyy tasapainotetun mittariston kehittämiseen.
Tasapainotetun mittariston malli korostaa yrityksen strategian kuvaamista ja mittaamista tasapainotetulla ryhmällä mittareita, jotka on linkitetty syy-seuraussuhteilla toisiinsa.
Tasapainotetut mittaristot ovat osoittautuneet arvokkaiksi erityisesti strategian toteuttamisessa.
Ne mahdollistavat strategian selkiyttämisen ja kommunikoinnin, työntekijöiden motivoinnin, yhdensuuntaisten suunnitelmien tekemisen sekä stategisen suoritustiedon saamisen.

Tutkimus hyödyntää toimintatutkimusmetodia.
Se on suoritettu suomalaisessa teknologiaintensiivisessä yrityksessä ja sen yhdessä divisioonassa.
Tutkimuksella pyritään tukemaan kohdeyrityksen mittaristoprojektia sekä testaamaan ja kehittämään suunnitteluprosessiin liittyvää ymmärtämystä.
Diplomityön tutkimusongelma on kaksiosainen ja se voidaan esittää seuraavilla kysymyksillä. a) Kuinka tasapainotettu mittaristo pitäisi suunnitella? b) Minkälainen tasapainotetun mittariston malliin pohjautuva mittaristojärjestelmä olisi sopiva kohdedivisioonalle ja kuinka sitä tulisi käyttää?

Tutkimuksen tavoitteet ovat analysoida ja tiivistää tasapainotettua mittaristoa, sen kehittämistä ja käyttöä koskeva aikaisempi tutkimustieto kuvailla ja analysoida kohdeyrityksen tasapainotetun mittariston suunnitteluprosessia kehittää prosessimalli tasapainotetun mittariston suunnitteluun tunnistaa kohdeyrityksen alustavan mittariston vahvuudet ja heikkoudet antaa suosituksia järjestelmän kehittämisestä ja valmiin järjestelmän käytöstä Tutkimus perustuu pääosin laadulliseen tietoon, jota on kerätty kirjallisuudesta, Vaisalan sisäisistä materiaaleista, tekemällä useita haastatteluja sekä osallistumalla projektin kokouksiin.

Tutkimus osoittaa, että tasapainoitetun mittariston suunnittelu ja erityisesti validin strategiakartan muodostaminen voi olla hyvinkin haastavaa.
Teoreettisten ja empiiristen tulosten perusteella tutkimuksessa kehitetään prosessimalli suunnitteluvaiheelle.
Se sisältää muun muassa uuden metodin mittareiden luomiseksi sekä analysointimallin mittareiden, mittaristojen ja koko järjestelmän laadun analysoimiseksi.
Kohdedivisioonan alustava mittausjärjestelmä myöskin analysoidaan kehitetyllä mallilla ja sen perusteella annetaan suosituksia järjestelmän kehittämisestä ja käytöstä.
Mittausjärjestelmä ja sen analysointi ovat luottamuksellisina jätetty julkisesta versiosta pois.
