Abstract (eng): The purpose of this thesis is to explain and analyze key differences and similarities in the mobile communications service industry in Finland vs. in China.
Although it is extremely difficult to make cross-country comparisons in telecommunications, most essential and measurable aspects from the complex and turbulent mobile service fields are handled in this study.
A detailed presentation of government roles, current status, and scale and development trend of the market has been provided.

The research is based on extensive literature reviews and a series of qualitative interviews.
The market dynamics are analyzed by applying Porter's five forces and value network models.
The analyses find that a higher degree of competitiveness is displayed in the Finnish mobile communications service industry; the change in the roles of the value network members is believed to be the most important force reshaping the current mobile value networks in both countries.
This study is particularly relevant to the governments for evaluating their regulatory environments and improving their regulation procedures, and to the mobile operators for developing or sharpening their competitive forces and maximizing their value creation.
It is also useful for international experts who wish to get a good understanding of the Finnish and Chinese mobile communications fields.
