| Abstract (eng): | The subject of the Master's Thesis is a design of an extension to the Aland maritime museum in Marienhamn. The spatial program is based on the architectural competition held in 2003. The current spaces are inadequate for the museum's collection. There is also a need to shift the museum's focus toward a more interactive direction in order to provide for researchers, students and seminars. The maritime museum is on Hamngatan in the English Park adjacent to the Marienhamn western port. The park forms an end point to both Norra Esplanadgatan and Stora Gatan, which connects the eastern and western harbours. The English Park is a popular recreational and picnic area and a place for a number of events and celebrations throughout the year. Tied to the pier running next to the maritime museum is the museum ship Pommern, one of the more popular attractions of Marienhamn. Pommern is governed separately from the maritime museum, but the two works in close co-operation. The now standing maritime museum is representative of the 1940's Nordic functionalism. It was designed by architect Jonas Cedercreuz and completed in 1949. The extension is located between the old building and the English Park. The main entrance is moved to face the shoreline and Pommern. On Hamngatan, next to the old entrance, is the library entrance. The old and new parts are connected by a two-storey high lobby. The arrangement leaves the old building's wall visible into the lobby and clearly shows the border between the two parts. The exhibition spaces are articulated to the shore side of the extension, while the height of the Hamngatan side is limited to the eaves height of the old part. The exhibition spaces are arranged to augment the circulation of the existing museum. Natural light is not allowed into the exhibit areas, the scenic windows are situated as places of rest and contemplation along the circulation route. |
| Abstract (fin): | Diplomityön tarkoituksena oli suunnitella laajennus Maarianhaminassa sijaitsevaan Ahvenanmaan merimuseoon. Tilaohjelma perustuu vuonna 2003 käytyyn arkkitehtuurikilpailuun. Museon nykyiset näyttelytilat ovat käyneet kokoelmille pieniksi. Lisäksi museon toimintaa halutaan muuttaa interaktiivisempaan suuntaan tarjoamalla tiloja myös tutkijoiden, seminaarien ja koululaisten käyttöön. Merimuseo sijaitsee Maarianhaminan länsisatamaan liittyvässä Englantilaisessa puistossa, Hamngatanin varressa. Puisto muodostaa päätteen Norra Esplanadgatanille ja Stora Gatanille, joka yhdistää toisiinsa kaupungin itä- ja länsisataman. Englantilainen puisto on suosittu ulkoilu- ja piknikpaikka, jossa järjestetään myös erilaisia tilaisuuksia ja juhlia. Merimuseon välittömässä läheisyydessä on Maarianhaminan suositumpiin nähtävyyksiin kuuluva museolaiva Pommern. Museolaiva on hallinnollisesti erillinen kokonaisuutensa, mutta toimii yhteistyössä merimuseon kanssa. Nykyinen Merimuseo edustaa 40-luvun pohjoismaista funktionalismia. Rakennus valmistui vuonna 1949 arkkitehti Jonas Cedercreutzin suunnittelemana. Laajennusosa sijoittuu merimuseon ja Englantilaisen puiston väliin. Pääsisäänkäynti on siirretty rannan puolelle, Pommernin läheisyyteen. Vanhan pääsisäänkäynnin vieressä Hamngatanilla on kirjaston sisäänkäynti. Laajennus liittyy vanhaan rakennukseen kaksi kerrosta korkealla aulatilalla, jolloin vanhan rakennuksen seinä jää sisätilassa vapaaksi ja rajapinta uuden ja vanhan välillä on selkeästi nähtävissä. Laajennuksen massoittelu paljastaa näyttelytilojen sijainnin rannan puolella. Korkeampi osa on sidottu vanhan rakennuksen rannan puoleiseen räystäskorkoon. Näyttelytilat on sijoitettu kahteen kerrokseen täydentämään vanhan rakennuksen näyttelykiertoa. Näyttelytiloihin ei tule luonnonvaloa, vaan näkymäikkunat on sijoitettu levähdyspaikoiksi näyttelykierron lomaan. |
