Abstract (eng): | This thesis examines the potential applications of exergy analysis in the cold end of an ethylene plant. The objective was to find out how to apply the exergy grand composite curve and to consider its feasibility as a means of achieving energy savings. The literature review examines the principles of exergy and pinch analysis, concentrating on the combination of these two methods. It also examines how utilities can be optimized and how exergy losses can be minimized in processes and distillation columns. The applied section of my research examines the cold part of an ethylene plant. The plant's exergy losses were minimized and annual savings calculated. To do this, stream data was collected and an exergy grand composite curve was drawn, which brought to light potential for process enhancements and resultant shaft work savings totalling up to 443 090 euros a year. I also examine how the energy consumption of a distillation column changes if the side reboiler is relocated there. The result was an increase in cooling and heating duties, but the exergy losses are much smaller than in the former column. Exergy curves provide a quick and efficient means of pinpointing inefficiencies and achieving potential shaft work savings. The method is usable especially in new process designs, where the degrees of freedom for the refrigerant system are untouched. The main problem is that the results depend greatly on the ambient temperature T0. For this reason it is important to choose the value of T0 very carefully. |
Abstract (fin): | Tässä työssä selvitettiin exergia-analyysin käyttömahdollisuuksia ja tutkittiin erään eteenilaitoksen energiankäyttöä exergiamenetelmän avulla. Siksi ympäristön lämpötilan valinta on tehtävä huolella. |
