Abstract (eng): Converting a ferry into a cruise ship usually means among other things that the trailer decks need to be filled with cabins.
Usually the limited free height in the aforementioned space is difficult to utilize and the cabins have to be assembled on the spot from prefabricated elements and this is rather time consuming and costly.

A modular solution for a cabin to be used in conversion projects was developed through studying existing cabins, modular technology and patents.
Several concepts were created for solving the problem using different approaches.
The concepts were designed for Superfast III, but it was kept in mind that they could easily be adapted to other ships as well.
The concepting work started by assessing specifications for the structure to be developed, followed by a morphological analysis to find the most potential structural alternatives for each function of the module.
These functional alternatives were then consecutively concepted and narrowed down until a feasible solution was found.

The end result was a concept of a modular double cabin unit with a thin intermediate deck, requiring less free height than traditional construction.
The concept consists of two superposed cabin modules, a support structure and an intermediate sandwich deck.
The concept drawings of all these elements are provided with the most relevant part drawings and a double cabin unit is possible to be built for testing according to these drawings.
The concept however still needs to be further developed and tested with the ultimate goal being a new product for the shipping industry.
The final product is to be launched on ship conversion projects.
Later on, applications in ship newbuilding are studied.
Lower cabin decks could make possible an additional deck into the ship, improving its passenger capacity further improving its revenue and overall profitability.
Abstract (fin): Autolautan konversio risteilyalukseksi edellyttää yleensä, että autokansista tehdään hyttikansia.
Rajoitetut vapaakorkeudet autokansilla ovat yleisesti vaikeasti hyödynnettävissä ja tästä johtuen hytit kootaan esivalmistetuista osista paikan päällä tuoden lisäkustannuksia.

Konversioprojektien tarpeeseen kehitettiin modulaarista hyttirakenneratkaisua tutkimalla olemassa olevaa tekniikkaa, hyttejä, moduulitekniikkaa sekä patentteja.
Useita konsepteja kehitettiin eri menetelmin ja konstruktioin.
Konseptien suunnittelun lähtökohtana käytettiin Superfast III-alusta, kuitenkin ottaen huomioon että lopputulosta voisi myös käyttää muissa projekteissa.
Konseptointi alkoi vaatimuslistan selvittämisellä ja morfologisen laatikon luomisella rakenteellisten vaihtoehtojen löytämiseksi moduulin eri funktioille.
Funktioiden rakenteellisia vaihtoehtoja kehitettiin edelleen kunnes toteuttamiskelpoinen ratkaisu oli valmiina.

Loppuratkaisuna on konsepti modulaarisesta kaksoishytistä, joka on varustettu matalakorkeuksisella välikannella, joka vaatii asennusympäristöltään tavanomaista ratkaisua pienemmän vapaakorkeuden.
Konsepti koostuu kahdesta päällekkäin asennettavasta hyttimoduulista, tukirakenteesta sekä kerroslevyrakenteisesta välikannesta.
Näiden elementtien konseptikuvat sekä tärkeimpien osien piirustukset esitetään mahdollistaen tuplahytin rakentamisen testikäyttöön.
Konseptia on kuitenkin tarkoitus jatkokehittää sekä testata tarkoituksena saattaa uusi tuote laivanrakennusmarkkinoille.
Lopputuote lanseerataan konversioprojektissa ja tavoitteena on lopulta saattaa tuote uudisrakennuskäyttöön.
Matalammat hyttikannet saattavat mahdollistaa laivaan lisäkansia nostaen laivan matkustajakapasiteettia ja täten kasvattaa laivan taloudellista tuottoa.
