Abstract (eng): This thesis studies session management, the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and the new Instant Messaging and Presence (IMP) service implementations built on top of SIP.
This is done by first reviewing SIP standard, its basic features, operations, and functions.
Then other similar standards and IMP implementations are analyzed and SIP is related to them.
Finally a pilot presence service is deployed in a test lab.
We found SIP to be the Internet world counterpart of the traditional telecommunication signaling protocol H.323.
However, the interoperability of several IMP standards, and thus the implementations, was found to be poor and in need of revision.
We see it crucial for the IMP to have a common, likely combined, standard.
For the pilot test we reviewed and evaluated several open source IMP implementations.
Based on the evaluations, SIP Express Router (SER) was chosen as the test-bed system.
It was found to be standards-compliant, but still not interoperable with the widely used IMP client, Windows Messenger.
This thesis shows the significance of IMP and the demand for clear standard for application interoperability.
