Abstract (eng): Internet-based instant messaging applications are used widely nowadays.
They provide a broad selection of services to be used in personal communication.
However, the existing systems have some common disadvantages.
These are heavy usage of centralized servers and the compatibility of different systems.

Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) is a high level protocol providing mechanisms to define arbitrary services to local area network .This protocol is independent of platform and operating system.
UPnP devices consist of services that are defined by service templates.

This thesis work defines an instant messaging service based on UPnP.
The service makes it possible to send media messages of arbitrary types.
Some simple queries can also be executed between messenger devices.

In addition to the definition of the service template, a prototype using the defined template is implemented.
The prototype is based on audio messages.
The prototype application is proved to be functional.
Abstract (fin): Internetiä hyödyntävät pikaviestisovellukset ovat nykyään laajalti käytössä.

Universal Plug and Play on korkean tason protokolla, jonka avulla voidaan määritellä mielivaltaisia palveluita lähiverkkoon.
Tämä protokolla on käyttöjärjestelmä- ja alustariippumaton.
Siinä palvelumallit määrittelevät loogisia palveluita, jotka edelleen muodostavat loogisia laitteita.

Tässä diplomityössä on määritelty pikaviestipalvelu Universal Plug and Play-protokollaa hyväksikäyttäen.
Palvelu mahdollistaa mielivaltaisen tyyppisen mediaviestin lähettämisen toiselle pikaviestinlaitteelle.
