Abstract (eng): | This research evaluates designers' possibilities to work at applied research and foresightning, which are nowadays based on technological and economic factors. The research was done by 22 expert-interviews and literature analyse during the period of working at the Ministry of Trade and Industry. Applied research is partly publicly financed and it supports corporates' both product development and applied research. Mostly, applied research is done by Tekes and VTT in Finland, which has a major role at supporting Finnish industry and so state of Finland. Tekes has also an important role as financier. Reasons for doing foresightning is to maintain corporates as competitive as possible, because it supports research programs planning phase and strategy planning resulting to good estimates of development in future e.g. in the areas of technology and economy. The method used to interview the experts is called thematic interview. The backgrounds of the experts were distinctive but they are all experienced in the research questions. The interviews were analysed qualitatively and answers were mapped to the chart to present the grounds of conclusions. The interviews handled interfaces such as the designers, the applied research and the foresightning, where designers were handled mostly as industrial designers. Instead of industrial designers, results present them as designers because they are strongly specialized in categories such as usability, but designers cannot be classified perfectly. The designers could guide or manage multi-scientific teams at the applied research because their education is multi-scientific. They could also use their abilities to visualize discussion with different methods to help people understand well each other. The persons wished also that foresightning would have more marketing aspects. Such foresightning would be most appropriate for designers because their abilities have traditionally been in understanding customers' needs. The designers would be able to work well in those, if their education would include more aspects from different sciences like economy and technology. |
Abstract (fin): | Tämä tutkimus arvioi muotoilijoiden ja erityisesti teollisten muotoilijoiden mahdollisuuksia toimia soveltavassa tutkimustoiminnassa ja teknologian ennakoinnissa, joiden toteutus on nykyään pääasiassa teknologia- ja talouslähtöistä. |
