Abstract (eng): Organizations commonly rely on VPN technology to provide secure remote access to their private intranets.
At the present several smart phone products also support VPN.
This has generated a requirement to further develop the overall mobility of the available VPN solutions.

The objective of this thesis was to compare the performance of two mobile protocols that can be used in association with the VPN and give a recommendation of the preferred protocol.
The compared protocols were MOBIKE and Mobile IP.
The basis of the comparison was formed by four typical mobile phone use cases.

The comparison was made purely based on the published protocol specifications.
First the relative performance of the studied protocols was evaluated in individual protocol operations such as connection tearup and teardown.
After this it was analyzed how the protocol performance differences in the individual protocol operations influence the overall performance in the given use cases.
Abstract (fin): Monet organisaatiot luottavat VPN-pohjaisiin tietoturvaratkaisuihin, joita tyypillisesti hyödynnetään otettaessa etäyhteyksiä organisaation suojattuun sisäverkkoon.
Nykyään myös monet älypuhelimet tukevat VPN-ratkaisuja.
Tämä on luonut tarpeen kehittää VPN-ratkaisujen yleistä mobiliteettia.

Tämän työn tarkoitus oli verrata kahden VPN-käyttöön soveltuvan mobiiliprotokollan suorituskykyä ja antaa tämän vertailun pohjalta suositus parhaiten tarkoitukseen soveltuvasta protokollasta.
Verratut protokollat olivat MOB1KE ja Mobile IP.
Vertailun lähtökohdaksi annettiin neljä tyypillistä matkapuhelinten käyttötapausta.

Protokollien vertailu suoritettiin puhtaasti perustuen prokollaspesifikaatioihin.
Protokollien suhteellista suorituskykyä arvioitiin ensin yksittäisissä protokollaoperaatioissa, kuten yhteyden muodostuksessa ja purussa.
Tämän jälkeen analysoitiin, miten suorituskykyerot yksittäisissä operaatioissa heijastuvat protokollien suhteelliseen suorituskykyyn annetuissa käyttötapauksissa.
