Abstract (eng): The objective of this thesis is to investigate the connection between user information and idea-generation in user-centered product development.
Both the practice and theoretical background of the issue are very complex and therefore difficulties are experienced in the industry.
The aim was to identify some of the challenges of acquiring and using user information in the product development process and idea generation.
The possible role of idea generation techniques as a solution is investigated.
The emphasis is put into early, ambiguous stages of the product development process.

As sources for examining the status quo, a broad literature review from several fields of science was conducted.
Seven interviewees from different types of product development organizations were selected to map current methods and practices of idea generation and user research.

The interviews revealed that systematic idea generation methods and user research were used to lesser degree than expected.
Barriers of information exchange, motivational factors and organizational challenges blocked promising ideas and effective use of user research findings whenever user-research was done.
Formal idea generation methods were reported to he used mainly for organizational recreation and team-building prior to development project.

The need for a broader view for idea generation methods was discovered: most of the problems were reported where tacit user-information or justifications of concepts are transferred to further development.
These gaps could be bridged with particular idea-generation methods as the use of these methods increase information exchange and team building or by implementing a user centered process where the development team interacts directly with users.

Managerial implications for using tacit user-information as a basis for idea generation while transferring findings to development team are discussed.
Results of the study highlight the need for further research of issues such as the effect of idea generation methods on information exchange, techniques for more effective co-creation with end users and balanced use of analytical and intuitive methods both in idea generation and user-research.
