Instructions

Reading digital theses in the closed network of the Aalto University Harald Herlin Learning Centre

In the closed network of Learning Centre you can read digital and digitized theses not available in the open network.

The Learning Centre contact details and opening hours: https://learningcentre.aalto.fi/en/harald-herlin-learning-centre/

You can read theses on the Learning Centre customer computers, which are available on all floors.

Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.

Abstract (eng): Most services on the Internet are built on centralized architecture, where one cluster of servers handles all of the requests despite of where the user is located.
This architecture works well for users who are located near but poorly for users who are far away.
Easy solution for this problem is to distribute the servers around the world, but it also means that the users using different servers cannot communicate with each other.

This thesis studies current methods for distributing a simulation game platform to multiple servers around the world.
The goal is to find a way for a reliable communication between the servers 50 that the players can play against each other despite of where they are located and which server they are using.
This thesis focuses on open source frameworks for the Java language.

The methods studied in this thesis are Paxos, Virtual synchrony, Multiversion concurrency control and Distributed shared memory.
The methods are evaluated through their implementation frameworks, which are Chubby, JGroups, JBoss Cache and XSTM.
The speed of the frameworks is measured with a custom test program and after the measurements their overall usability is evaluated against predefined criteria.
This thesis concludes that out of the four introduced frameworks, JGroups performs the best and is the preferred choice.
Abstract (fin): Useimmat Internet-palvelut käyttävät keskitettyä arkkitehtuuria, jossa yksi klusteri palvelee kaikkia käyttäjiä riippumatta siitä missä käyttäjä sijaitsee.
