Reading digital theses in the closed network of the Aalto University Harald Herlin Learning Centre

In the closed network of Learning Centre you can read digital and digitized theses not available in the open network.

You can read theses on the Learning Centre customer computers, which are available on all floors.

Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): The amount of videos in the Web has increased significantly in recent years.
These videos often lack proper description of the content and this causes challenges in handling and searching information.
Video annotation is a way to create textual descriptions for the content of videos.
The purpose of this Thesis is to find out how a web based video annotation tool could be built by using advanced web technologies and taking the latest trends like collaborative contributing into account.
The technologies used are widgets and the upcoming new standard HTML 5 that provides new means for presenting videos in the Web - the video tag.

As a result of this Thesis a web based annotation tool is built using the new technologies.
The study demonstrates that the technologies can be used to build such tool.
Information about advantages and disadvantages of using the selected technologies in general and particularly in this kind of application is also obtained as result.
Abstract (fin): Videoiden määrä verkossa on kasvanut merkittävästi viime vuosina.
Videoilta puuttuu usein riittävät kuvailutiedot sisällön osalta ja tämä aiheuttaa haasteita tiedon hallinnassa ja etsinnässä.
Videoiden annotointi on tapa tekstimuotoisten kuvailutietojen luomiseen videoiden sisällölle.
Tämän diplomityön tarkoituksena on tutkia miten WWW-pohjainen videon annotointityökalu voitaisiin toteuttaa käyttäen kehittyneitä WWW-teknologioita ja ottamalla huomioon viimeisimmät suuntaukset, kuten yhteisöllisyys.
Käytetyt teknologiat ovat widgetit ja tuleva uusi standardi HTML 5, joka tarjoaa uuden tavan videoiden esittämiseen - video-tagin.

Diplomityön tuloksena rakennettiin WWW-pohjainen annotointityökalu käyttäen edellä mainittuja uusia teknologioita.
Työ osoittaa, että teknologioita voidaan käyttää tällaisen työkalun rakentamiseen.
Tuloksena saadaan myös tietoa valittujen teknologioiden hyödyistä ja haitoista sekä yleisesti, että erityisesti tämänkaltaisessa sovelluksessa.
