Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): Local sourcing in disaster relief is an interesting research topic that has so far received little attention.
The amount of disasters as well as interest in green and ethical sourcing are increasing, accentuating the importance of humanitarian logistics and local sourcing in disaster relief.

The objective of this study is to identify prerequisites of local sourcing in disaster relief.
The topic is approached from the perspective of supply networks and supplier relationships.
Thus, theories on supply networks, supplier relationships, purchasing and disaster relief are combined in order to construct a conceptual framework interlinking the different factors affecting local purchasing in disaster relief.

Two research paradigms have been combined in this study: multiple qualitative case study research and constructive research.
The empirical part of the study examines two cases in which purchasing from local markets in disaster relief was conducted successfully.
The local sourcing operations were managed by a small, local non-governmental organization and a large, international aid agency.
The conceptual framework was applied in the analysis of the empirical data and the cases were then compared to each other.
The comparison of the two cases was possible due to their sufficient similarities and interesting due to their differences in supply network structures and supplier relationship types.

The findings of this study show the importance of humanitarian organizations' local, permanent supply networks in successful local sourcing operations during disaster response.
With regard to supplier relationships, both low-involvement and high-involvement as well as short-term and long-term relationships proved to be successful.
In addition, this study discovered that both large, international aid agencies and small, local non-governmental organizations can succeed in purchasing from local markets in disaster relief.
Abstract (fin): Paikallinen ostotoiminta katastrofiavussa on tärkeä tutkimusalue, jota ei ole juuri huomioitu.
Sekä katastrofien määrä että kiinnostus ympäristöä säästävää ja eettistä ostotoimintaa kohtaan on lisääntynyt, lisäten näin humanitaarisen logistiikan sekä katastrofiavun paikallisen ostotoiminnan merkittävyyttä.

Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää katastrofiavun paikallisen ostotoiminnan edellytykset.
Aihetta lähestytään tilaus-toimitusverkostojen sekä toimittajasuhteiden näkökulmasta.
Tilaus-toimittajaverkostoihin, toimittajasuhteisiin, hankintatoimeen sekä katastrofiapuun liittyviä teorioita yhdistetään tutkimuksen käsitteellisessä viitekehyksessä.
Kyseinen viitekehys liittää yhteen paikalliseen ostotoimintaan katastrofiavun kontekstissa vaikuttavat tekijät.

Tutkimus on konstruktiivinen tapaustutkimus, jonka aineisto on kerätty kahdesta onnistuneesta katastrofiavun paikallisen ostotoiminnan tapauksesta.
Näissä kahdessa tapaustutkimuksessa paikallinen ostotoiminta suoritettiin pienen, paikallisen hallituksesta riippumattoman järjestön sekä suuren, kansainvälisen avustusjärjestön koordinoimina.
Käsitteellistä viitekehystä käytettiin empiirisen aineiston analyysissä ja tämän jälkeen tapauksia verrattiin keskenään.

Tutkimuksen mukaan humanitaarisen organisaation paikallinen, pysyvä tilaus-toimitusverkosto ovat tärkeä edellytys katastrofiavun paikallisen ostotoiminnan onnistumiselle.
Toimittajasuhteista sekä etäiset että läheiset toimittajasuhteet ja lyhytkestoiset sekä pitkäkestoiset toimittajasuhteet osoittautuivat mahdollisiksi.
Tämän lisäksi tutkimus osoitti, että sekä pienet, paikalliset järjestöt että suuret, kansainväliset avustusjärjestöt voivat onnistuneesti ostaa tarvikkeita katastrofiapuun paikallisilta markkinoilta.
