Abstract (eng): | This thesis deals with the problem of merging visual information from multiple cameras looking at the same scene from different angles. The goal of the research is to create coherent views for surgeons performing minimally invasive surgery (MIS), where direct visual feedback from the surgical site is unavailable, and imaging devices like cameras provide the view. The work has been funded TEKES and The Research Foundation of Helsinki University of Technology, Research was carried out at the Department of Automation and Systems Technology of Helsinki University of Technology. The survey part of the thesis covers techniques and technology for imaging the inside of the human body, extracting features from images and merging images by stitching. The following parts introduce the process of image stitching, which starts from feature extraction and matching between images. The correspondences obtained are then used to estimate transformations between the images in order to align them. The aligned images can then be stitched together by blending the pixels, resulting in a composite view. In the experimental part of the thesis, each step of the image stitching process is tested and evaluated, starting from two different methods for feature extraction. Variations are also tried for the succeeding steps. The tests show that image stitching can produce viable composite views for minimally invasive surgery |
Abstract (fin): | Tässä diplomityössä käsitellään visuaalisen informaation yhdistämistä useasta kamerasta, jotka kuvaavat samaa näkymää eri kulmista. |
